The two-week MuTra-PhD - financed by the EU's Marie Curie Program -
offers instruction in research methods and international experts' advice on
ongoing research projects (choosing a PhD topic, analyzing relevant
literature) and support in critical thinking and reading, as well as
structuring and presenting research papers. Expert instruction is
complemented by practical workshops in the fields of audiovisual
translation and LSP communication as well as project management. 
The language of instruction is English.

The European Union grants scholarshops for young researchers within the
Marie Curie (HMR) Program for participating in the PhD training seminar and 
supports the invitation of internationally leading research experts in the
field.

The EU-financed PhD School Multidimensional Translation (MuTra-PhD)
addresses the multiple (multilingual, multimedia, multimodal and
polysemiotic) dimensions of modern translation tasks and investigates the
impact of modern technologies on the form, content, structure and modes of
translation and interpretation. It integrates research in LSP communication
& cross-cultural knowledge management, media translation and interpretation
(including subtitling for handicapped) as well as technical translation. 
Its objective is (1) to identify and explore the interplay of these
multiple dimensions relative to the standards of coherence, information
structuring, isotopic continuity and translation methodologies 
and (2) to train young researchers in the respective research methods and
enhance their intercultural communication abilities and experience.

MuTra is supported by eight European partners in Aarhus (Prof.Dr.Jan
Engberg), Berlin (Mary Carroll/Titelbild)), Budapest (Prof. Dr. Kristina
Szabari), Copenhagen (Prof. Dr. Henrik Gottlieb/University of Copenhagen),
Flensburg (Prof. Dr. Klaus Schubert), Ventspils/Riga (Prof. Dr. Valda
Rudzia/University of Ventspils)und Vienna (Prof. Dr. Gerhard Budi). 

Overall coordination rests with Saarland University's Advanced Translation
Research Center (ATRC), Prof. Dr. H.Gerzymisch-Arbogast with support by
Eurice GmbH (Joerg Scherer).

In August 2005, the Nordic Network on Variation in Speech Production
and Speech Perception (VISPP) will organize an international summer
school on speech variation in Palmse, Estonia.

Tutors include four distinguished researchers who will offer lectures
and guided tutorials on different aspects of variability in speech
ranging from individual variation in typical and atypical (impaired)
speakers to models for parameterising speech patterns. The programme
also will include additional hands-on activities and student
presentations.

Fiona Gibbon (Queen Margaret University College, UK):
Speech production and pathologies: normal and disordered EPG data

Valerie Hazan (University College London, UK):
Issues of individual variability in speech production and/or
perception in various populations (L1 and L2 speakers, children
with dyslexia, children with hearing impairment)

Anne-Marie Öster (KTH, Sweden):
Pronunciation training in relation to variation in phonological
capabilities for prelingually hearing-impaired children and L2
speakers using several computer-based systems

Martin Russell (University of Birmingham, UK):
Engineering approaches to modelling variability in speech signals

One of the VISPP network's main goals is to establish contacts and
promote cooperation between researchers and Ph.D. students from
different countries and disciplines through workshops and courses. In
this spirit, the Summer School welcomes post-graduate students from
any country interested in the phenomena of spoken language variation
and motivated to engage in open-minded interdisciplinary learning.
