Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics

Call Deadline: 04-Apr-2005

Meeting Description:

'Themes and Trends in Southern African Linguistics'

In the past, the languages of Africa in general, and more specific Southern
Africa, have been of great interest to both local and international
scholars. Not only does Africa provide an abundant and unique source of
languages and language families, but also, given a long history of
colonisation by and interaction with speakers of mainly European languages,
a worthwhile context to study various linguistic and sociolinguistic
phenomena, such as language change, language contact, and language
politics. Although not quite as pronounced as on other continents, a
substantial tradition of linguistics in Africa and Southern Africa has
therefore been established over the last hundred years or so.

At the 2005 conference of the Linguistic Society of Southern Africa the
emphasis will fall on themes and trends in Southern African linguistics
over the past ten years, with a prospective view on the next ten years. The
opening plenary speaker(s) at the conference will be Bertus van Rooy and
Marné Pienaar will look at past and future themes and trends in Southern
African linguistics. Other (international) plenary speakers that we have in
mind include a syntactician and sociolinguist who work on Southern African
linguistics (to be confirmed soon).

Papers in the following domains will be welcomed, although other
possibilities can also be explored:
** Grammar of Southern African languages (including phonetics, phonology,
morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and discourse studies)
** Sociolinguistics in Southern Africa
** Language Politics in Southern Africa
** History of Southern African languages
** Language practice in Southern Africa (e.g. translation, interpreting,
text editing, lexicography, language management & technology)

Besides papers for the general session, scholars are also invited to submit
proposals for theme sessions, e.g. ''Themes and Trends in isiXhosa
Linguistics'' or ''Themes and Trends in urban sociolinguistics''. It will be
required of organisers of these special theme sessions to write a short
description of the theme session, receive abstracts for papers for the
theme session, have these abstracts reviewed according to the practice of
the general conference, and correspond with the conference organisers
regarding the programme. The number of theme sessions could be limited,
depending on the number of proposals received.

To submit an abstract or a proposal for a theme session, please send a
short abstract/description of 500-600 words in plain text or as a Microsoft
Word document to Prof. Adelia Carstens: adelia.carstens at up.ac.za. The
document should also contain the title of the paper/theme session, the
name(s) of the author(s) and his/her/their affiliation, as well as contact
details. All abstracts will be reviewed anonymously by two reviewers.

Schedule/Due Dates:
Proposals for Theme Sessions: 14 February 2005
Notification of Proposals: 25 February 2005
Second Call for Papers: 1 March 2005
Closing Dates for Submission of Abstracts (for General and Theme Sessions):
4 April 2005
Notification of Acceptance: 29 April 2005
Conference: 6-8 July 2005
