Meeting Description:

Communication mediated by information and communication technology (CMT) can be
defined as communication between human beings instrumentalized by means of
digital networks ; although so far CMT has taken place mainly through the
channel of writing, this definition includes a large number of functions, and
the variety of forms that this means of communication can take only parallels
the diversity of its conditions of production and reception.

Relatively little research has been carried out in France in the area of CMT. If
one excludes research conducted in the area of man-machine communication, the
main focus in this country has been on the social and cultural aspects of CMT
and its use in learning contexts. These are important areas, but research should
also consider more language-related aspects (while also taking into account
their social and cultural contexts).  If we want to gain a better understanding
of the pragmatics of natural languages, and French among them, we need to
understand, on the one hand, the nature, the roles and the functions of the
various types of CMT, and on the other hand the forms of language and of
textuality of each type of CMT.

The conference will be structured around four main themes: 

Language: vocabulary, syntax, speech and writing. What is the degree of
convergence of the conventions of speech and writing in CMT? What is the
influence of the different types of CMT on the language used?

Discourse: typology, structure, forms for specific occupational and non
occupational purposes. What text forms and what discourses are used and
developed in these new practices?

Behaviors: what are the roles of interactivity, of synchronicity, of the
association of different medias? What is the influence of the language of CMT on
everyday language?

Norms: what new norms emerge from usage? 

Presentations can focus on either of the following areas:

the language of institutional, commercial, advertising sites 
the communication between individuals: e-mail, forums, chat, blogs, SMS, ?

1. Theme of the conference

The conference will be structured around four main themes:

influence of the different types of CMT on the language used?

2. Submission of proposals

We invite submissions for papers related to one of the above themes. Proposals
should be sent by September 15, 2005. Notification of acceptance will be sent by
October 30, 2005.

Each participant will have 30 minutes for his/her presentation and 10 minutes
for a question/answer session.  The language of the conference will be French.
Presentations in English will also be accepted.

Proposals are to be sent by e-mail (attached file, Word or .pdf), regular mail
or fax by September 15, 2005 to :

New Roman, Font 12)
