2006 International Conference on English Instruction and Assessment 

Background:

Following the communicative theories of language and trends in methodology, language assessment has shifted its focus from discrete-point tests to performance-based measures. Now researchers are documenting the importance of interweaving assessment with instruction. Teachers are experimenting with alternate assessment formats to profile students' growth and change. Nevertheless, standardized tests are by and large used for screening and exit decisions in many areas. In addition to such dilemma, computer-based or web-based language assessment challenges English teachers and test writers. The conference will provide a forum for members of international English instruction and assessment community who are interested in sharing observations on changes in language assessment and its integration with bewildering technology. It is intended to be a sequel to the 2004 conference in Taiwan and a bi-annual event of National Chung Cheng University.

Call for Papers: 

Abstracts are invited for 30-minute presentations (including 10 minutes for questions and comments) related to the overall theme, including, but not limited to:

- testing of language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing)
- multiple assessment
- computer-based/web-based testing
- ESP/EAP (English for Specific/Academic Purposes)
- any topic related to English teaching

Call for Workshops: 
Abstracts are invited for 60-minute workshops (including 15 minutes for questions and comments) related to the overall theme, including but not limited to:

- testing of language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing)
- multiple assessment
- computer-based/web-based testing
- ESP/EAP (English for Specific/Academic Purposes)
- any topic related to English teaching 	

Call for Publishers' Sessions: 
Abstracts are invited for 60-minute publishers' sessions in which representatives of publishers demonstrate how a textbook or other teaching material can be applied in the classroom. 

Criteria for Selection:
All proposals will be subject to a blind review by a team of ESL/EFL experts selected by the Conference Organizing Committee. Relevance to the topics of the conference and to English language teaching practice in Taiwan and the neighboring regions, quality of research, and originality of approach are among the major considerations in acceptance of papers. The committee reserves the right to turn down proposals for presentations without stating reasons.

Abstracts should be anonymous, and should be about 200 words written in Chinese or English. On a separate sheet, please give the following information:

Meeting Description:

The 2005 AUSTRALEX conference (Australian and New Zealand Society for Lexicography) will take place at the University of Melbourne on Tuesday 27 September, at Trinity College. The conference theme will be 'Dictionaries and the community', designed to examine the contexts of dictionary-making and dictionary use. 

Keynote speaker for the conference will be Dr Ghil'ad Zuckermann, currently a fellow at the Research Centre for Linguistic Typology (La Trobe University), who will focus on the role of the Academy of the Hebrew Language in compiling and creating a lexicon for modern Israeli speakers, both in Israel and overseas. 

Papers on dictionaries and other kinds of lexica compiled for other communities in the Australia-Pacific region and beyond are most welcome. Abstracts of 300 words should be submitted by 31 July.
