WORKSHOP ON THE MEASUREMENT OF BILINGUAL PROFICIENCY: METHODOLOGICAL ASPECTS

The focus of this colloquium will be on the measurement of bilingual proficiency, and in particular on methodological issues involved in comparing measures of language proficiency across languages that are typologically different. The proposed colloquium will bring together researchers interested in exploring the implications of what Grosjean (1997) has called the complementarity principle: the fact that bilinguals use their languages for different purposes and in different domains of life. While it is well-known that bilinguals can be dominant in one or the other of their languages because of the different use they make of each language, few researchers have attempted precise measurements of different degrees of bilingualism. In addition, many studies on language proficiency in bilinguals focus on only one language, but the complexity of bilingual competence calls for a different approach in which aspects of both languages are taken into account. 

Call for papers

I would like to organise a workshop on the measurement of bilingual proficiency at the 16th Sociolinguistics Symposium in Limerick/ Ireland (6-8 July 2006, see: http://www.ul.ie/ss16/prog.html). If you would like to participate, please send me the title of your paper and a short outline no later then 28 July 2005.

FORMAT: 20 minute oral presentations with 10 minutes for questions. If there is sufficient interest, a poster session will be organized.
