THE APPOINTMENT
The Department of English Language invites applications for a lectureship
in English Language. Applicants should have an undergraduate qualification
in Modern English Language or Linguistics or a cognate discipline, together
with a PhD in an area of Modern English Language/Linguistics. While those
with expertise in Sociolinguistics and Phonetics are particularly
encouraged to apply, applications from those with teaching and research
interests in any core area of Modern English Language/Linguistics, such as
Semantics and Grammar, will be welcomed.

JOB PURPOSE
To contribute to and support the teaching and research activities of the
Department.

KEY TASKS
Teaching tasks:
· Develop, deliver and examine courses of the curriculum.
· Develop relevant courses (especially at postgraduate level) in relation
to research expertise.
· Supervise postgraduate students and Honours dissertation students.

Research tasks:
· Actively contribute to the research base of the Department.
· Submit research proposals, secure external research funding, and publish
research outputs.

Administrative tasks:
· As determined by the Head of Department.

DEPARTMENTAL STRUCTURE
The Department of English Language, which was founded in 1948, has around
750 undergraduate students, including 100 at Honours in any given year, and
a postgraduate population of about 30. There are currently 10 permanent
members of staff (four professors, two readers, four senior lecturers), 6
funded Research Fellows (AHRC, ESRC, EPSRC) and 21 Graduate Teaching
Assistants. The Department is supported by 2 secretaries. The Head of
Department is Professor Mike MacMahon.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND SESLL
The Department is a member of the School of English and Scottish Language
and Literature (SESLL) alongside the Departments of English Literature and
Scottish Literature. The School is organised on a confederal basis; its
Head is elected by members of the School.

EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS
In RAE 2001, SESLL's research rating was 5*, and was ranked 'Excellent' in
the SHEFC Teaching Quality Assessment.

DEGREE PROGRAMMES
The Department offers a full range of undergraduate courses over the four
years of the Scottish MA degree. The Department also works with other areas
of the University, including Scottish Literature, Psychology, Modern
Languages and History. At postgraduate level, the Department offers
supervision for higher degrees by research in Modem and Historical English
Language studies; a number of taught postgraduate courses in the subjects
within its remit are also available, and new courses are currently being
developed. In all its postgraduate courses, the Department offers a
component of subject-specific research-training.

EXTERNALLY-FUNDED RESEARCH PROJECTS
The Department is home to a range of funded research projects, with support
from, for example, the British Academy, The Arts and Humanities Research
Council, The Economic and Social Sciences Research Council, the Engineering
and Physical Sciences Research Council, and the Leverhulme Trust. Research
Projects include:

· Scottish Corpus of Text and Speech
· Is Television a Contributory Factor in Accent Change in Adolescents?
· Stylistics, Text Analysis and Cognitive Science: Interdisciplinary
Perspectives on the Nature of Reading [Joint project with the Dept of
Psychology]
· Accent Change in Glaswegian
· The Historical Thesaurus of English
· The Middle English Grammar Project (with the University of Stavanger)
· Medieval English Textual Culture
