Meeting Description:

2005 Chinese Summer Institute on Pragmatics in the CFL Classroom

The University of Hawai'i-Manoa National Resource Center East Asia in
conjunction with the National Foreign Language Resource Center at the University
of Hawai'i-Manoa is pleased to announce a one-week summer workshop on teaching
pragmatics in the Chinese as a Foreign Language classroom. For over a decade,
teachers and researchers alike have recognized the central role of pragmatics in
language learning, and the receptiveness of learners at all levels to the
explicit instruction of pragmatic aspects of the target language. Moreover,
learners who receive explicit instruction in pragmatics often greatly improve
their ability to communicate effectively and appropriately in the target language.

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to a wide range of pragmatic
phenomena in Chinese spoken discourse, and to explanations, activities,
materials, and approaches for the instruction of pragmatics in the CFL
classroom. Workshop activities will include lectures on Chinese pragmatics and
the explicit instruction of pragmatics to CFL learners, as well as model
teaching sessions where pragmatics-focused instruction will be demonstrated.
Additional sessions will address related issues such as providing feedback to
learners, assessing learner performances, and learner reactions to explicit
instruction of pragmatics. The activities during the latter half of the workshop
will focus on the development of instructional materials and strategies for the
explicit instruction of pragmatics in the beginning CFL classroom.

The workshop will provide an opportunity for anyone, regardless of their
experience with teaching pragmatics, to develop instructional materials and
strategies for introducing pragmatics to CFL learners. Interested Chinese
language educators teaching at the secondary or collegiate level are welcometo
apply.

Please visit the institute website at http://www.hawaii.edu/nrcea/csimain.htm
for more information. An application form for the institute, as well as
information about financial assistance provided to participants, is available at
the website. Deadline for applications is June 15, 2005.
