Penn Center Gullah Studies Institute - Summer Cultural Program
St. Helena Island, South Carolina

The Penn Center Gullah Studies Institute is initiating a summer cultural program
designed for K-12 teachers, pre-service teachers and interested individuals.
Courses will be offered in three areas:  history, language, music, and
education.  Workshops will feature Gullah in crafts and in the arts.

At historic Penn Center in Beaufort County, SC, approximately 100 participants
will immerse themselves in history, literature, creative writing, visual art,
music, drama and Sea Island crafts.

Institute partners:  Breadloaf School of English at Middlebury College, Vermont;
South Carolina State University; and the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill.

Classes will be held (and housing provided) on the Penn Center campus.  Theatre
activites, museum and gallery visits and history trips to nearby Charleston,
Savannah and Columbia are included in the curriculum.
