Description:

Two 4-year PhD-positions and one 3-year Postdoc position in the Dutch
NWO-funded project Tone and Intrasegmental Structure in West-Germanic
Dialects. The two PhD positions are available from the 1st of September
2005; the Postdoc position is available from the 1st of January 2006.

The project contains three subprojects. The main goal of the first subproject is
to develop a typology of the vowel-tone interactions that occur in the modern
West-Germanic dialects and to develop a theory that is able to explain this
typology. The second project has the same objectives, but now with respect to
the interactions between consonants and tone. These two subprojects will be
executed by PhD-students.  The third subproject assumes a historical
perspective. Its main objective is to develop a theory of the ontogenesis of the
West-Germanic tones. The Postdoc will execute this project. The three
subprojects are closely connected. Therefore, the three researchers have to work
in close cooperation with each other.

The two PhD-students should have solid knowledge of modern phonological theory.
They should also have thorough knowledge of Dutch or German. The postdoctoral
fellow must be an expert in the phonology of Germanic languages.

The project leaders are Paul Boersma (Amsterdam University), Marc van Oostendorp
(Meertens Institute) and Ben Hermans (Meertens Institute). Detailed information
