Description:

Seeking an individual for a part-time research project in New York City.  The
work will involve linguistic analysis of text corpa.  Specific activities will
include annotating corpa with respect to sentence, paragraph and document
structure, and classifying elements and patterns found.

This research project will lead up to a software development phase, so the work
done in this part will be an input to that process.  The goal of this phase will
be to determine specific linguistic structures for the program to look for to be
able to parse these text corpa in an automated fashion.  This job will not
require programming skills.  But an understanding of how natural language
processing algorithms work would be a plus.  A strong understanding of
statistics would be very helpful since many NLP techniques rely heavily on
statistical analysis of occurance of certain linguistic and text features.

The ideal individual for this project would be someone with a strong research
background.  Ideally someone who has a strong understanding of logic, statistics
and the mechanics of the English language.  Someone who is creative, can think
out of the box, and who can suggest ideas or take the initative on new
experiments.  Some of the work will involve aspects of psycholinguistics - in
terms of identifying patterns in the ways people write certain things.

This is for a business application, so having experience in the business world
is ideal but not required.  You will be working with business people in
analyzing the text corpa so they will provide input.  We will be seeking to
identify patterns which are driven both by linguistic features and by business
information/rules.
