Bilkent University invites nominations and applications for the position of
Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Letters.

The dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the Faculty of
Humanities and Letters. He or she provides leadership in academic research,
educational development, budgetary issues, faculty evaluation, and hiring.
The dean reports to the Provost Office.

The Faculty of Humanities and Letters comprises five departments: American
Culture & Literature, Archaeology & History of Art, English Language &
Literature, Philosophy, and Turkish Literature. The first four departments
all have B.A. programs. (Additionally, the Department of Archaeology &
History of Art has an M.A. program.) The Department of Turkish Literature
offers graduate programs leading to M.A. and Ph.D. degrees.

The Faculty also houses a number of non-degree-granting units which offer
university-wide service courses in First Year English and Composition,
Foreign Languages (French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and
Spanish), History of the Turkish Republic, and Turkish. The Cultures,
Civilizations & Ideas program offers a year-long intensive course to

The requirements for this position are as follows: a doctorate in a
discipline appropriate to the Faculty of Humanities and Letters; a solid
publication track record in refereed journals or other reputable
international media; teaching experience at the university level. Previous
administrative experience in a university at the department-chair level or
higher is desirable. The successful candidate will be appointed as a full
professor within the Faculty.

The position has the starting date September 2005. The Search Committee
will begin screening applications at the end of April 2005, and will
continue until the position is filled. For full consideration, applicants
should submit (no electronic submissions please) a detailed résumé and the
names, phones, and emails of at least three references.

The name `Bilkent' is an acronym in Turkish for 'city of science and
knowledge.' Bilkent, the first private university in Turkey, gets the best
students each year through the nationally administered university entrance
exams. At Bilkent, all verbal and written classwork, assignments, and
practical work are carried out in English. Students interact with a
dedicated faculty most of whom were working in prominent universities in
North America and Europe when they received offers from Bilkent. According
to ISI Citation Indexes, Bilkent continues to be first in Turkey in number
of published papers per faculty member and ranks high internationally.

Situated in a modern, upscale neighbourhood of Ankara, Bilkent campus has
an excellent infrastructure, including a modern library, extensive
computing facilities and high-speed Internet, a concert hall (home to the
university's own, prestigious symphony orchestra), and a state-of-the-art
sports centre.
