Meeting Description:

This year the annual meeting of the South Asian Language Analysis roundtable is
celebrating its 25th (silver) anniversary and it also coincides with the 40th
anniversary of the Department of Linguistics. The conference will consist of a
General Session, a Parasession and a Special Session. There will be a
pre-conference symposium on language teaching.

GENERAL SESSION

The General Session will cover all areas of South Asian linguistic interest. We
encourage individual papers or panel proposals from diverse theoretical
frameworks and especially welcome those with interdisciplinary focus.

PARASESSION:  "South Asian Perspectives on Applied Language Science''

This parasession brings together leading scholars from different parts of the
world to focus and highlight, for the first time in this forum, a range of
theoretical-conceptual, methodological, and empirical contributions that studies
in South Asian languages have made to the area of applied linguistics.

SPECIAL SESSION:  "Language in Globalization: Perspectives from South Asian
Languages"

This session brings together scholars in the field of South Asian language
studies who will discuss the implications of globalization on the dynamics of
(multi-lingual) communities, (plural) identities, movements of linguistic
capital in global and transnational spaces, and, especially, on the forms of
sociolinguistic representations that are responses to non-local contexts and
influences.

An author may submit at most one single and one joint abstract. In case of joint
authorship, one address should be designated for communication with SALA.
Abstracts should be as specific as possible, with a statement of topic, approach
and conclusions, and should be no more than 400 words (not including data and
references, which may be placed on the reverse side).  5 copies of an anonymous,
one-page (8.5''x11'') abstract should be sent, along with a 3''x5'' card listing:
     (1) paper title
     (2) session (General/Para/Special)
     (3) name(s) of author(s)
     (4) affiliation(s) of author(s)
     (5) address where notification of acceptance should be sent
     (6) phone number for each author
     (7) email address for each author
     (8) subfield (syntax, phonology, discourse analysis, bilingualism etc.)

PRE-CONFERENCE SYMPOSIUM (Sept. 15, 2005): "Delivering South Asian Languages:
Current Practices, Future Models"

This symposium is designed to rethink/re-assess the curricular practices in
teaching South Asian languages and to find ways to engage them with current
paradigms of research in second/foreign language teaching.

PRESENTATION AND PUBLICATION
Individual presentations are allotted 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for discussion.
Panels can be proposed for either a 2-hr or a 3-hr period.  An attempt will be
made to publish selected papers (revised and edited) presented at the conference.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION
All attendees, including presenters, must register for the conference. For
advance registration, we can accept only checks or money orders drawn on US
banks in US dollars, made payable to the University of Illinois.

This workshop is about empty elements in syntax and phonology, which played an
important role in theories predating the minimalist program and optimality
theory. We want to investigate in how far the theories that accounted for the
typology and distribution of these elements are still relevant for our
present-day thinking, and to what extent our current insights shed new light on
this issue.

We invite abstracts for 40min talks (plus 15min of discussion). The abstracts
will be reviewed anonymously. The selection committee consists of both
phonologists and syntacticians, affiliated to the University of Tilburg and
other Dutch universities.

Please keep to the following instructions concerning your abstract.

- Submission is only possible in electronic form. The preferred format is .pdf
but we also accept .rtf, .doc, or plain text files.

- Send one copy that includes your name and affiliation, and one anonymous copy.

- Abstracts may not exceed two pages of text with an at least one-inch margin on
all four sides.

- Abstracts must employ a font not smaller than 12 point.

- Each page may include a maximum of 50 lines of text.

- Abstracts may include an extra page for references (not examples).

The deadline for sending in abstracts is: April 1, 2005.
The two files should be sent by e-mail to sos at uvt.nl.

The decision on acceptance for the conference will be communicated before June
1, 2005.
