Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics

Call Deadline: 15-Apr-2005

Meeting Description:

This conference is devoted specifically to exploring interfaces between SLA
research and second language instruction. Colloquia, individual papers, and
posters are therefore solicited which, from a variety of perspectives,
investigate SLA as it relates to various aspects of second language instruction
ranging from classroom practices to syllabus design, material development,
curriculum development, policy making, and assessment.

The Second Language Research Forum (SLRF) invites proposals for papers and
posters regarding theory and research in second language acquisition for its
annual conference, to be held at Teachers College, Columbia University from
October 7-9, 2005. We solicit colloquia, individual papers, and poster
presentations relevant to the conference theme: ''SLA models and second language
instruction: Broadening the scope of inquiry.'' We welcome submissions from a
variety of perspectives which investigate SLA as it relates to various aspects
of second language instruction ranging from classroom practices to syllabus
design, material development, curriculum development, policy making, and
assessment.

Submitters should specify one of the general research strands below under which
they wish their proposal to be evaluated.

General submission strands:

- Biological processes and effects
- Cognitive processes and effects
- Neurological processes and effects
- Developmental sequences
- Environmental influences
- Socio-cultural influences
- Linguistic analyses
- Pragmatic analyses
- Individual differences
- Research methodology
- Use of learner-corpora
- Evaluation, assessment, and testing

Proposals will be accepted for the following formats:

- Paper Presentations: 30 minutes long with a 10-minute discussion period.
Submissions should include an abstract of no more than 400 words and a program
summary of no more than 50 words.
- Poster Presentations: to be displayed for a 2-hour block of time. Posters
should meet basic size and design specifications to be supplied by the SLRF
conference organizers.

Those interested in submitting a proposal should visit the conference website at

Linguistic Field(s): Computational Linguistics

Call Deadline: 15-Jul-2005

Meeting Description:

PACLIC (Pacific Asia Conference on Language, Information, and Computation) is a
unique conference in its inter-disciplinary and multi-lingual nature. It aims to
create synergy between theoretical and computational linguists, as well as to
provide a forum for exchange and sharing of ideas among scholars of the Pacific
Asia region. Our vision is that the development and sharing of knowledge cannot
be blocked by disciplinary and national boundaries. The strength of the Pacific
Asia region lies in its multilingualism and multi-cultural heritage. Substantial
contribution to human beings can be made if synergy is created across the
multi-lingual and multi-cultural spectrum. The endurance and longevity of the
PACLIC conferences attest to the validity of this vision.

PACLIC19, just like all previous PACLIC's, welcomes original researches in
linguistic accounts and their application to and/or ramifications for language
and speech processing.

Foci of these studies should be on Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Thai, and other
languages used in the Pacific-Asia region.

The 19th Pacific Asia Conference on Language, Information and Computation
(PACLIC19) will be held in Academia Sinica on December 1-3, 2005. Following the
long tradition of PACLIC conferences, PACLIC19 emphasizes the synergy of
linguistic analysis and language processing - from theoretical frameworks to
cognitive accounts, from information processing to language understanding, and
from computational modelling to multi-lingual application. PACLIC19 will be
hosted by the Institute of Linguistics, Academia Sinica, and Taiwan's academic
association for computational linguistics, the Association for Computational
Linguistics and Chinese Language Processing (ACLCLP). The PACLIC19 website can
be found at http://paclic19.sinica.edu.tw.

We invite submissions of extended abstracts of unpublished research on all
aspects of theoretical and computational linguistics with special focus on
language spoken in the Pacific Asia region. Possible topics include but are not
limited to: (1) morphology, (2) phonology, (3) syntax, (4) semantics, (5)
pragmatics, (6) discourse analysis, (7) typology, (8) corpus linguistics, (9)
formal grammar theory, (10) natural language processing, (11) natural language
systems and (12) related computer applications.

Abstracts should not be longer than six (6) A4 pages (about 1,500 words). They
should use 11pt fonts and double line spacing throughout. Author information
should appear in a separate page containing the following information: (1) title
of the paper, (2) name(s) of the author(s), (3) affiliation(s), (4) postal
address, (5) e-mail address for correspondence, (6) the preference for oral or
poster presentation, and (7) the intention to be considered for young scholar
award. Accepted papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings. The
camera-ready final papers should be about 10 A4 pages with single line spacing.

The deadline for abstract submission is July 15, 2005. We accept only online
electronic submissions. The online submission system will soon be available at
the PACLIC 19 website. Hard copy submission will not be accepted.
