Subject: Editor/Programmer Marisa Ferrara on Life at LINGUIST

Dear LINGUIST List Subscribers,

When I first began working at LINGUIST List, I was a first year graduate student
in linguistics with, strangely enough, little experience in either linguistics
or computer programming. Now, after little more than 2 years with the
organization, I am finishing an MA in Linguistics, a Certificate in Language
Technology, and applying to several Ph.D programs in Computational Linguistics.
I would have never gotten here without the support of the LINGUIST List and its
subscribers, and would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank you and
let you know a little about what I do.

I instantly took to programming when I got to the LINGUIST List, but have only
been able to devote myself entirely to it this past year. I am now a LINGUIST
List programmer, and have been responsible for implementing various full
systems including automatic book and journal TOC upload facilities and an OLAC
archive for all language resources (available via the OLAC Archive Reposiory
Explorer). I also handle regular site maintenance such as bug fixes and
facility updates, and I help organize various phases of page-testing required
for all LINGUIST List pages before go-live.

I thoroughly enjoy this interplay between linguistics and programming, so much
so that I hope to continue by entering a graduate program in Computational
Linguistics next Fall. Of course, I would have never realized my penchant for
programming, nor my enthusiasm for applying programming to linguistics, without
my current position with the LINGUIST List. To be honest, it was only through
the LINGUIST List that I had even considered going on to pursue a Ph.D, and none
of this would have been possible without the support of generous donors like
you. You have not only helped support my degree, but the work I have done to
help maintain this list and site have given me an opportunity to branch into a
subfield of linguistics I would have never considered before.

Even though I will only be with the LINGUIST List one more semester, many of my
co-workers are just beginning their degrees. I see so much potential in each of
them, and I truly hope that this Fund Drive will generate enough funds to
support them through their degree programs as well. When you support LINGUIST,
you not only receive a direct and necessary service in return for your
generosity, but you also help fund potential linguists and therefore the
preservation of this discipline.

Help us help you. Your donation always counts.

Thank you for your time,

Marisa

Subject: How to donate...

This Year the LINGUIST List hope to raise $48,867. This money will go to help
keep the List running, by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to
donate by check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:

http://linguistlist.org/donate.html

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as
such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered
501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These
donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return
(U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact
your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your
contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU
Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple
administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST,
without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your
company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
