The Dept. of Linguistics of the University of Delaware would like to
announce a new emphasis in its graduate program. The Department studies
human language as a component of the mind/brain. The faculty and students
in the department bring together two approaches to the understanding of how
human language works:

*Experimental research on first and second language acquisition in
infants, children, and adults, language processing in adults and children,
and the neural and genetic bases of language and its relation to other
mental processes. The department is especially strong in first language
acquisition, which is a major area of research for three members of the
Department and a secondary research area for two more, making Delaware one
of the strongest departments in the country in language acquisition.

*Comparative research on the diversity and uniformity of the languages of
the world from Malay to Mohawk, Japanese to Javanese, Arabic to American
Sign Language, Turkish to Tuscan Italian, focusing on the core areas of
descriptive and theoretical linguistics (syntax, semantics, phonology,
phonetics and morphology) and on similarities and differences among
languages in language acquisition and processing. Cross-linguistic
comparison complements experimental research in examining language as a
component of the mind/brain.

These two approaches are inter-related.  Traditional linguistic field work
is supplemented by experimental studies of language acquisition and
processing of endangered and less studied languages.

In addition to the Doctoral program in linguistics, the Department of
Linguistics, in cooperation with the Program in Cognitive Science, is the
academic home of an M.A. track in Cognitive Science offered as an option in
the M.A. in Cognitive Science and Linguistics.

Linguistics and Cognitive Science research at Delaware are supported by
grants from the National Science Foundation and the University of Delaware
Research Foundation.  Research projects currently include Traditional Jambi
Malay (conducted in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for
Evolutionary Anthropology) and the structure of Passamaquoddy.
