Subject: ICAS Specifications for Localization of Date and Time Terms

Alliance for the Advancement of Technology (AAT at www.aatideas.org) is
reviewing ICAS (Integrated Chronological Applications System) specifications for
the localization of terms for representing date and time information.

Those new to ICAS can find an introduction in the 12005 poster series:

(poster 1 of 3 - order and unitform)
http://www.aatideas.org/d/d5X-poster-01.pdf

(poster 2 of 3 - unitforms of the Uniform Calendar)
http://www.aatideas.org/d/d5X-poster-02.pdf

(poster 3 of 3 - metrication month 12005 X)
http://www.aatideas.org/d/d5X-poster-03.pdf

A reference draft of ICAS localEnglish is also accessible at (web index of AAT
ICAS Agave 6.31)
http://www.aatideas.org/icas/index.html

Two main linguistic issues under consideration are:

1) XML specification of ICAS codes for language coding schemes

AAT would like to reference existing schemes of language classification. The
following list might be amply extensible. Yet the particular ICAS codes and
descriptions should be regarded as subject to change following a period of review.

        ICAS language code language description

        "iso.ch-639-2x" ISO 639 (2 character language codes)
        "iso.ch-639-3x" ISO 639 (3 character language codes)
        "iso.ch-3166" ISO 3166 (2 character country codes)
        "dublincore.org" dublincore language element
                (ISO 639-2x, ISO 3166 optional, e.g., "en-us")
        "unicode.org-language" unicode language name
        "unicode.org-win-name" unicode Windows Name
        "unicode.org-win-code" unicode Windows Code
        "unicode.org-mac-name" unicode Mac Name
        "unicode.org-mac-code" unicode Mac Code
        "loc.gov-marc" loc.gov MARC
        "linguist.org" linguist language resources element

As a controlled technical vocabulary, it might be useful to classify ICAS in
terms of a particular style, register, locale, etc. For the time being
it seems convenient to pursue development of ICAS along the lines of an Internet
locale of common English for ICAS users. AAT however does not wish
to impose a particular scheme of localization if another would be determined to
be practicable.

So AAT is also open to suggestions for specifying extensible schemes for
designating ICAS in terms of style, register, locale, etc.

2) termset localization of blockSpectrum color terms

AAT has designated the blockSpectrum 7-day daygroup termset for AAT ICAS Agave
localEnglish. The day names are designated for colors of light in the visible
spectrum, and are thus derived from terms corresponding to colors theories.
These colors are also part of a web-design color palette.

        !draft-5Y14! blockSpectrum RGB color reference:

        COLOR R G B
        White 255 255 255
        Violet 0 0 153
        Blue 0 0 255
        Green 0 255 0
        Yellow 255 255 0
        Orange 255 153 0
        Red 255 255 0
        Eve localizable
        End localizable

        !draft-5Y14! blockSpectrum CMYK color reference:

        COLOR C M Y K
        White 0 0 0 0
        Violet 100 98 5 6
        Blue 88 77 0 0
        Green 63 0 100 0
        Yellow 6 0 97 0
        Orange 0 47 100 0
        Red 0 99 100 0
        Eve localizable
        End localizable

The term scheme can also facilitate a practicable method for color-cueing
daygroup data that is also uniform to schemes of day-of-uniform month and to
day-of-year.

Some issues may however arise in determining names for dayname constants for
other languages (for purposes of defining ICAS term constants for
software). Although AAT has specified certain principles for structuring term
set elements (AAT ICAS Agave-1400), particular localization issues
should be determined by native language users of an ICAS language localization.

So AAT doesn't have a position on whether the ICAS term names for other
localizations need to have a unique initial letter, or whether the
reference color Violet should be named with reference to a color definition
(e.g., French 'Indigo' corresponds to English violet) or with reference to a
term cognate (e.g., French 'Violet' corresponds to English purple).

Thus both terms for light and dark purple are included in the !draft-5Y14!
localization table below:

setseq English French German Spanish Italian

01 White Blanc Weiss Blanco Bianco
02 Violet Indigo/Violet Indigoblau/Lila Azul Añil/Morado Indaco/Viola
03 Blue Bleu Blau Azul Blu
04 Green Vert Gruen Verde Verde
05 Yellow Jaune Gelb Amarillo Giallo
06 Orange Orange Orange Naranja Arancione
07 Red Rouge Rot Rojo Rosso

29 Eve Veille Vorabend Víspera Vigilia
30 End Fin Ende Fin Fine

I would be glad to post a summary of responses, or to post an update of ICAS
localization resources.
