I have requested for some references on on-line processing studies dealt
with English articles and received helpful recommendations from several
scholars such as Francis Bond, John A. Hawkins, Evan Kidd, and Charles T.
Scott. I am grateful for their kind and valuable responses.

See chapters 4.3 and 4.4 of 2004 Efficiency and Complexity in Grammars
book, Oxford University Press (which deals with processing considerations
in the evolution of definite articles in languages that have them).

Quite a few years ago, Peter Master published an excellent article in the
TESOL QUARTERLY on the syntax and semantics of the English articles,
particularly the definite article.
