Meeting Description:

Poetics and Linguistics Association (PALA) one-day symposium on STYLE IN FICTION. Presentations and discussions on stylistic and structural analysis of fiction writing. Held in the George Fox Building, Lancaster University, Lancaster LA1 4YT, UK. All welcome.

REGISTRATION: Symposium fee: £40 (£25 for students), including coffee and lunch. Fuller details will follow, including REGISTRATION FORM. Watch website.

OUTLINE PROGRAMME: Registration begins 9 a.m. Presentations by Barbara Dancygier (UBC), Cathy Emmott (Glasgow), Elena Semino (Lancaster), David Hoover (NYU). Opening contributions from host organizers Geoff Leech and Mick Short. Panel Discussion 'Style in Fiction - where next?' with Peter Stockwell (Nottingham) and Peter Verdonk (Amsterdam) and others. Symposium chair: Katie Wales. Close: 6.00 p.m.

WHY THIS SYMPOSIUM? To celebrate its first 25years, PALA polled its members to award a prize to ''the most influential book in stylistics'' published during that period. The prize was awarded to Leech and Short's 'Style in Fiction: A Linguistic Introduction to English Fictional Prose' (Longman, 1981). PALA decided to hold this special symposium, hosted by the authors. Despite the link with the book, proceedings will be firmly focused on new developments in the field.
