15th POSTGRADUATE CONFERENCE IN LINGUISTICS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER

The aim of the conference is to bring together postgraduates from within the
various areas of the discipline for them to present current research to their
peers. A well known guest speaker will be invited to give the plenary talk (to
be confirmed). We hope the day will be rewarding for all, both in learning and
establishing new contacts.

The PG Conference will be held at the University of Manchester on Friday 3rd
March 2006, from 9.00am to 6.00pm.

15th POSTGRADUATE CONFERENCE IN LINGUISTICS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER

Call for Papers

Dear Postgraduates,

In March 1992 the University of Manchester hosted its first Postgraduate
Linguistics Conference. Since then, this annual event has gained popularity and
it now draws participants from across the world to exchange ideas in a relaxed
but stimulating environment.

Any postgraduate student (MA or PhD) is very welcome to submit an abstract on
any topic related to linguistics.

Papers will be 20 minutes in length plus 10 minutes discussion.

Parallel sessions will allow twenty papers to be given.

Refreshments and lunch will be provided during the day (payment included in the
registration fee), and an informal conference dinner in the evening will also be
organised for all those interested. Suggestions for overnight accommodation can
be provided on request. 

Please send abstracts by email in Word or PDF version to the conference email
address <pgconference2006 at hotmail.co.uk> by the 10th of January 2006. They
should have a maximum of 300 words (excluding references). If you are using any
special font, please attach them to the document and let us know. Together with
the abstract, you should provide the following information: your name, your
affiliation (department and university), your email address (the one you check
regularly), the title of the paper, and the area of research (e.g. syntax,
phonetics, psycholinguistics, etc.).
The selected abstracts will be informed in late January. The papers presented
will be published in our annual series of proceedings (PLUM).

Integrating Natural Language Processing and Computer-Assisted Language Learning:
current status and future prospects

Workshop organized within the framework of the TALN 2006 conference

NLP (Natural Language Processing) and CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning)
are two highly productive fields. Although both fields are concerned with the
study of language, the links between them are still relatively tenuous. Systems
such as ELEONORE, ALEXIA, FREETEXT or platforms such as EXILLS and MIRTO
integrate NLP methods and tools, but they tend to be the exception rather than
the rule and concern non-commercialized products. 

In view of this, initiatives need to be taken that will prompt meetings and
encourage collaboration between these two worlds along the lines of past events
organized within the framework of ATALA (www.atala.org) or the EUROCALL
'Language Processing' group (http://siglp.eurocall-languages.org/).

The workshop that we propose to organize within the framework of TALN 2006 will
enable researchers from NLP and CALL to present their research on the use of NLP
in language learning, to encourage exchanges and collaborations, establish a
common area of study, draw a map of the projects in the fields and open up new
research avenues. 

All aspects (theoretical, conceptual, applied) of the use of NLP in CALL will be
broached upon. The list of topics below includes a few examples of the aspects
that may be tackled:

- Applications of (written or spoken) language processing in CALL
- Methodological issues relating to the design of NLP-based CALL systems 
- Demonstration of NLP-based CALL tools 
- Design and use of corpora for language learning
- Use of learner corpora; error annotation of learner corpora
- Diagnosis, feedback and remedial work
- Design and creation of tasks
- Linguistic resources for language learning
- Linguistic theory/formal linguistics and CALL

Submissions should be formatted using the TALN 2006 style guidelines with overt

Length: 10 pages (references included).

Dual submissions to the main TALN 2006 conference and this workshop are allowed;
if you submit to the main session, do indicate this when you submit to the
workshop. If your paper is accepted for the main session, you should withdraw
your paper from the workshop upon notification by the main session.

Please send your submission (as .doc or rtf. files) no later than January 20,

Each submission will be reviewed by two members of the workshop committee.
Accepted papers will be published in the TALN 2006 proceedings.

Traitement automatique des langues et Apprentissage des langues assisté par
ordinateur : quelles perspectives d'intégration ?

Atelier organisé dans le cadre de TALN 2006

Le TAL (Traitement Automatique des Langues) et l'ALAO (Apprentissage des Langues
Assisté par Ordinateur) sont deux domaines très productifs. Paradoxalement, ces
deux domaines, pour lesquels la langue est au centre des préoccupations,
semblent encore s'ignorer. Et pourtant, l'utilisation du TAL pour la conception
des didacticiels des langues n'est pas une idée nouvelle ; quelques systèmes
comme ELEONORE, ALEXIA, FREE-TEXT ou des plateformes telles EXILLS et MIRTO font
appel à ses procédures et utilisent des produits qui en sont issus. Néanmoins
ces exemples restent encore marginaux et concernent, le plus souvent, des
produits non commercialisés.

Des initiatives doivent donc être prises pour provoquer les rencontres et
susciter la collaboration entre ces deux mondes, comme ce fut le cas lors de
journées de l'ATALA (www.atala.org) ou dans le cadre du groupe 'Language
Processing' d'EUROCALL (http://siglp.eurocall-languages.org/).

L'atelier que nous nous proposons d'organiser permettra aux chercheurs des
différents domaines concernés de présenter leur point de vue et/ou leurs
réalisations concernant l'utilisation du TAL pour l'apprentissage des langues,
de favoriser les échanges et les collaborations, de dégager une problématique
commune, de cartographier les travaux - tant francophones qu'anglophones - du
domaine, d'ouvrir, si possible, de nouvelles pistes de recherche.

Tous les aspects (théoriques, conceptuels, de mise en oeuvre) de l'utilisation
du TAL pour l'ALAO sont concernés par cette journée. La liste de thèmes
ci-dessous est donnée à titre indicatif :

 - Apports du traitement de la langue (écrite ou parlée) pour l'ALAO et applications
 - Nécessité et contraintes de prise en considération des méthodes et techniques
du traitement de la langue pour la conception des didacticiels pour les langues

accepté dans la session principale, merci de retirer votre soumission dès que
vous en serez informé(e).
