Description:

DCAL - the Deafness, Cognition and Language Research Centre - is a major
new research centre funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, UK.
The Centre comprises a series of thematically linked research projects on
sign language linguistics, language processing, face-to-face communication,
language development, atypical sign language, and the deaf individual and
the community. The Centre will be launched in January 2006 and over the first
five years of its existence we will establish a team of 15-20 researchers,
research students and support staff. The following post is available to start in
January 2006 or as soon as possible thereafter. 

Post-doc language researcher - 4 year post (Ref RA6) to carry out behavioural
research in the area of language processing in British Sign Language and
English, including recruiting participants, preparing experimental materials,

Grade and Salary Range: 	
RA1A Pt 9 £25565 + £2400 London weighting 

Job Summary: 
The postholder will be required to carry out experimental psycholinguistic
research in the area of BSL processing based on methodologies from language
production, comprehension and cognitive neuroscience. This post is for a PhD
holder in psychology, linguistics or related discipline who has completed their
PhD who is a native or, at least, proficient signer of any SL. Initially the
postholder will be responsible for BSL norming studies and will then spend 80%
of the time working with Prof. Vigliocco contributing to designing, conducting
and reporting the language processing experiments, and 20% of the time working
with Prof. Bencie Woll and Dr. Gary Morgan on language development and atypical
language.

Person Specification:
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and attributes: 
Essential:
- Ph.D. in relevant subject area (e.g. psychology, linguistics, cognitive
neuroscience, etc.)
- Proficient knowledge of BSL or another sign language
- Experience in language research
- Computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team
- Commitment to UCL's policy of equal opportunity and the ability to work
harmoniously with colleagues and students of all cultures and backgrounds

Desirable:
- Experience in multi-disciplinary research environment
- Specific experience in behavioural psycholinguistic experimentation,
cross-linguistic research, cognitive neuroscience
- Experience in acquisition, manipulation and transcription of video data.
- Ability to conduct statistical analyses
- Specific knowledge of software packages for behavioural experimentation, or
demonstrated ability to gain such knowledge in a relatively short time-frame.
