We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

Dear linguists,

Is anybody aware of a socio-pragmatic study or bibliography or literature
review of apologies? I particularly need a speech-act orientation toward
politeness. Additionally, is there any language in which apology is
(honorifically and/or respectfully) made without any wrongdoing being made
in advance?

Thank you for your sincere cooperation.

Regards,

R. Ni

I will be teaching comparative Romance Historical linguistics next semester
and am going through my every-two-year search for a textbook. The class is
at the graduate level and includes students in French, Italian, and
Spanish, all of whom have had some linguistics (variously, phonetics,
structure of one of these languages, history of one of these languages) and
are fluent in one or another language, but not all. I ended up not using a
textbook last time I taught the class, but want to ask again for
suggestions and (if necessary) warnings.

I will be glad to post a summary if there is interest.

Many thanks in advance,
Margaret
