The Workshop on Identity in Ellipsis is a one-day workshop to be held on October
8, 2005 at the University of California, Berkeley. It will be comprised of four
talk/response pairs and will conclude with a round table discussion.

In recent years, challenges posed by exciting new language data have motivated
fresh interest in ellipsis phenomena. A great deal of research has concentrated
on the identity constraints, both semantic and syntactic, that limit the
application of various types of ellipsis, including VP-ellipsis, sluicing, and
NP-ellipsis (as well as other kinds of null anaphora). This workshop will be
dedicated to examining these identity constraints, with an emphasis on the
following questions: To what degree does syntactic identity play a part in
constraining ellipsis? And how, precisely, should semantic and syntactic
constraints be formulated?
