================================================================

The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

Department: Department of Literature, Area Studies and Europea
Job Rank: Post Doc
Specialty Areas: Neurolinguistics
Required Language(s): English (eng)
Norwegian, Bokmål (nob)

Description:

Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in neurolinguistics (REF.NO 06/4088/GDO)
Available at EYE-to-IT, an EU-FP6-FET supported project at the Department
of Literature, Area Studies, and European Languages (ILOS), Faculty of
Humanities, University of Oslo.

Gross monthly salary: From approximately EUR 3955 to a maximum of EUR 4248.

Requirements:
- A PhD in neurolinguistics or related areas in linguistics.
- The candidate's work must be closely connected to the central topic of
EYE-to-IT, broadly construed.
- The candidate is expected to have a good command of Norwegian or one of
the other Scandinavian languages, as well as of English.
- The University of Oslo has as a goal to recruit more women in research
positions. Women are encouraged to apply.
- The final candidates will be called to an interview at the University of
Oslo on May 16th 2006.
- Applicants should send an application with CV (including list of
publications), certified copies of references, diplomas, a writing sample
(total word limit: 10 000), all in four copies.

EYE-to-IT is an EU-FP6-FET (Future and Emerging Technologies) supported
project directed by Professor Maxim Stamenov, at the New Bulgarian
University. In connection with EYE-to-IT, a fellowship is awarded for a
period of one year with the possibility of a second year renewal contingent
upon complementary project funding.

EYE-to-IT: Outline of Project
The purpose of the project is to investigate, under controlled experimental
conditions, the task of translating by professional translators. The visual
input in the source language (L1) of professional translators will be
monitored with eye-tracking technology. The translators' keystrokes during
typing in the target language (L2) will be logged with the output
monitoring tool Translog. Furthermore, the brain performance during
perceptual input and motor output will be monitored with a brain activity
recording technique (EEG). The task requirement - translation of identical
semantic content from L1 into L2 - will guarantee the compatibility of
input and output patterns at a certain level of structure and make it
possible to compare and interpret output and input in terms of the
complementary pair: comprehension and production. In addition, the
interface between the working memory (WM) and long-term memory (LTM) of the
translator will be prompted when feedback provided by a modified version of
the computerized tool iDict is given. Simultaneously, the brain performance
during the prompting with EEG will be monitored. The intention is to
achieve an integrated experimental and application design that fulfils the
requirements of a human-computer monitoring and feedback system. The
building of such a system will allow the in depth study of a
mind-brain-behaviour-computer interaction system with a complete-cycle
mini-max set of variables. Complete-cycle monitoring offers the possibility
of providing its operator with feedback in different combinations for
different purposes, e.g. with automatic prompting of the translator's LTM
for fast finding of means of expression in L2.

We are looking for candidates who work on these kinds of issues, broadly
construed.

The candidates will be expected to work in close cooperation with the other
researchers in the project, and to participate in the various workshops and
conferences organized by the project-leader as part of EYE-to-IT.

The application should be addressed to the University of Oslo and should
include: CV (including list of publications), certified copies of references,
diplomas, a writing sample (total word limit: 10 000), all in four copies.

Applications must be written in English. Please mark applications with the
REF.NO: 06/4088 and send within deadline to the address below.

This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $52,932. This money will go to help keep the
List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.

See below for donation instructions, and don't forget to check out our Fund Drive 2006
LINGUIST List Cruise for some Fund Drive fun!

http://linguistlist.org/cruise.html

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to donate by
check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:

http://linguistlist.org/donate.html

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
