The Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago is pleased to invite
abstracts for submission to the Workshop on Chinese Linguistics to be held at
the University of Chicago, December 1-2, 2006.

James C-T Huang (Harvard University)
Moira Yip (University College London)

Papers should address problems of Chinese linguistics from a theoretical 
perspective. Abstracts must following the guidelines below:

-Abstracts are limited to two single-spaced pages. Data and examples must be
given within the body of the text rather than at the end. 
-All texts should fit within a letter-size or A4 page, 12-point font with 1-inch
margin all around. Romanize all Chinese texts, and avoid Chinese character fonts
unless absolutely necessary.
-Abstract submission is by email-attachment only. Save your abstract as a pdf
file. (Documents in other formats must be converted before submission.) Name
your abstract with your last name followed by the suffix pdf (e.g., smith.pdf).
Send your abstract to: aclyu at uchicago.edu.
-Abstract selection is based on anonymous review. Please leave your name and
affiliation out of the abstract. In your email, however, please make sure to
include the following information:

-Title of your paper;
-Your full name (capitalize your last name);
-Affiliation (department and university);
-Preferred mailing address (where acceptance letters, if needed in hard copy,
should be sent);
-Your telephone number and email address.

Submission deadline: August 31

Meeting Description:

The theme of the conference is historical English linguistics in general. 

The Society of Historical English Language and Linguistics (SHELL) will hold a
biennial conference on 7?9 September 2007.

All Events will take place in the meeting room on the ground floor of School of
Letters in Higashi-yama Campus, Nagoya University.  Detailed maps and

The theme of the conference is historical English linguistics in general.  So
far, we have accepted a workshop organized by Prof. Michiko Ogura: Old English
versions of the Gospels -?a dialectal-synchronic comparison.  Two plenary papers
will be given in the morning of the 2nd and the 3rd days.  Abstracts of papers
for 30 minutes should be submitted by the end of April 2007, up to 500 words in
length, to Masachiyo Amano (mamano at lit.nagoya-u.ac.jp) or Tomoyuki Tanaka
(tanakat at lit.nagoya-u.ac.jp) in doc (MS word) or PDF format.  

Papers accepted will be published in the proceedings.  (The papers read at the
2005 meeting were published as Textual and Contextual Studies in Medieval
English: Towards the Reunion of Linguistics and Philology (ed. by Michiko Ogura)
by Peter Lang.

Registration fee is \5,000 (Euros €37, £25 or US $45).  Everyone whose paper is
accepted is asked to pay another \5,000 to the editorial board.  The length of
the final version to be printed should be about 5000 words including notes and
references.  Payment shall be done on arrival.

Accommodation will be available in the city center of Nagoya, which is one of
the cities that have a superb subway system. Thus reserve a room at a hotel
close a subway station. The hotel we recommend is:

This is a good hotel and comfortably accessible from the conference venue by
