The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Job Rank: Researcher
Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; Language Documentation and Revitalization
Required Language(s): Bislama (bis)

Description:

CUSO is a Canadian International Development organization that aims to
bring the expertise of those in the global South and Canada
together—through volunteer placements, mutual collaboration, training,
programming, exchanges, and resource sharing—so both can continue to
enhance and grow vital social justice programs for the long-term.

We are currently looking for Canada-based professionals in the field of
Linguistics to fill the following Volunteer Cooperant Placement in Vanuatu,
Melanesia.

VOLUNTEER COOPERANT PLACEMENT DESCRIPTION
As part of its current program profile, CUSO in Melanesia has committed to
supporting organizations and communities working on cultural affirmation
issues, including vernacular language preservation and revitalization.
CUSO already supports the Vanuatu Kaljoral Senta (VKS) and Vanuatu National
Language Committee (NLC) through the provision of a host national
(Ni-Vanuatu) cooperant linguist. However, this host national cooperant has
found that there is far too much work for one person, and has identified a
role for Canadian cooperants doing language documentation, and orthography
and literacy materials development in the rural areas.

The Pelmol Literacy Trust (PLT), based in Southwest Santo in Sanma
Province, is a CUSO partner group and has already done cooperative work
with the NLC. PLT will act as the local host partner agency for a linguist
cooperant placed jointly with PLT and the NLC. With Pelmol as a base, the
cooperant will be in a position to work with the many languages of Sanma
Province. The cooperant will aim to support the establishment of
vernacular literacy programs in Grade 1 in as many schools as possible as
per the Ministry of Education policy to have vernacular literacy in primary
schools throughout the country.

VOLUNTEER COOPERANT QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal cooperant will have:
- a university degree in applied linguistics (preferably a Masters degree);
- orthography and literacy materials development skills; and
- experience with a multi-strategy critical literacy approach

The cooperant will be a patient, flexible self-starter, and will have a
strong interest in cultural diversity and issues related to colonization
and globalization. The cooperant will also have experience living in a
cultural context other than ones own, as well as living in an isolated
rural location.

NOTE TO APPLICANTS
We would appreciate it if applications were submitted in English. The
working language for this placement is the local language as well as
English and our partner agency in the field and our local country staff,
which we collaborate with for the short listing of applications, is not
able to work in French. Applications in English can then be easily shared
with our overseas offices for review and consideration.

Only on-line applications will be considered.
