Dissertation Abstract:

This study aimed to find out the effects of multimedia instructions on the
academic performance of students in higher education. It also sought to
find out in what areas of linguistic and comprehension skills the students
showed excellent and poor competencies.

The experiment was conducted in two non-accredited learning institutions in
General Santos City, particularly, the Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges
and Holy Trinity College on the second semester, 2002 - 2003. There were
76 subjects for the experimental groups, and 74 subjects for the comparison
groups. Pretest-Posttest was administered to the subjects to gather data.
T-test, F-test, and DMRT were used in treating the data.

The effect of multimedia instructions on students' linguistic and
comprehension skills was significant except one comprehension skill -
noting details. The experimental groups showed excellent competence in
recognizing the main idea; while the comparison groups did not show
excellent competence in any of the skills. They had a poor performance in
noting details and sequencing.

Multimedia instruction enhances students' learning when properly applied
according to the instructional objectives.

It is recommended that instructional module as well as activities be
enriched to enhance the noting details skills of the students.
