Meeting Description:

Summer School 'First Language Acquisition' 2007 in Basel, Switzerland
Type: Course for Graduates
Subject: First Language Acquisition
Host: Swiss Linguistics Society (SSG/SSL)
Organization: Prof. Dr. Annelies Häcki Buhofer (University of Basel); Prof. Dr. Heike Behrens (University of Basel); Prof. Dr. Bruno Moretti (University of Bern); Prof. Dr. Jacques Moeschler (University of Genf)
Location: University of Basel, Deutsches Seminar, Nadelberg 4, CH-4051 Basel
Date: 3th - 7th September 2007
Scheduled keynote tutors (being planned): Shanley Allen, Melissa Bowerman, Eve Clark, Elena Lieven, Michael Tomasello.

Description: Recent research on first language acquisition benefited from the comparison of findings in different languages and modalities (gestures), and from larger data bases. In terms of research history, older concepts pattern learning re-emerged, but are now investigated with more rigorous corpus-linguistic and experimental methods.

In this summer school, we bring together leading experts in the field who look at acquisition from a usage-based or emergentist perspective. The presentations and workshops focus on the role of variation (individual, typological, cultural), as well as on the processes of abstracting linguistic information on the basis of language input, and will address the latest corpus-based and experimental methods in first language acquisition research.

The workshop offers you the opportunity to present your own research plans and projects and discuss it with an expert audience and fellow scholars. It is also an excellent occasion for networking and meeting colleagues from other universities.

Registration: via Email to sekretariat-haecki-germa at unibas.ch. Please indicate your full name, title, private and institutional addresses, title/subject of your dissertation/research project (date of take-over), name of your supervisor.

Note: All the lectures and representations will have to be given in English: in sense of a functional multilingualism. This is necessary in consideration of our international guests. And it's also a good exercise for your oral language skills in English as important language of science.

The places are assigned in order of the registration.
