Description:

The Meertens Institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences invites 
applications for a full time PhD position in phonology.

The succesful applicant receives a training within the Dutch LOT-system, participating in 
the LOT Summer and Winter Schools. He/she will carry out research within the group 
Variation Linguistics of the Meertens Institute. The research should lead to a 
dissertation.

The contract will be for 2 years and 8 months, but can be extended 4 months if the 
prospects for a thesis are favorable. The starting date is March 1, 2007, or as soon as 
possible if that is convenient for the prospective candidate.

The research is to be carried out in the context of the NWO-funded program Tone and 
Intrasegmental Structure in West-Germanic. This project aims to develop a typology of 
processes in West-Germanic dialects where segments and tone interact, and to work out an 
explanation of the attested phenomena in terms of formal phonology. Specifically it 
investigates Limburg dialects, in the South East of the Netherlands, and the dialects 
spoken in the adjacent areas in Germany and Belgium.

The project is supervised by Ben Hermans, Marc van Oostendorp (both at the Meertens 
Institute) and Paul Boersma (Institute of Phonetic Sciences at the University of 
Amsterdam) .

The Meertens Institute is a research institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts 
and Sciences. Linguistic research at the Meertens Institute concentrates on the study of 
linguistic variation in the Netherlands from a variety of perspectives. For more

The ideal candidate holds a strong Master's degree in theoretical linguistics, or in 
Germanic linguistics, with emphasis on phonology.
He or she should have thorough knowledge of German or Dutch.

The salary is determined by the Dutch scale CAO-OI and amounts appr. to: first year EUR 
1903; second year EUR 2217; third year EUR 2322.
