Abstract:

The study is a language-historical investigation of the use of the
conjunctive mood in speech rendition. The textual data source consists of
105 transcripts from questioning in Early Modern witch trials dating from
1580 to 1650. Numerous tables document the results in detail. The extensive
appendix of data sources will be of interest not only to linguists, but
also to historians.
