Meeting Description:

Themes : The theme of each conference centres on the notion of 'plurilingual competence', with each association addressing this notion according to its specializations while the joint day gathers together those contributions most likely to intersect with the interests of each of these groups. The details of the topics can be found under the 'programme' section.

Participants : The two conferences are international and aimed at an international audience of teachers (of language or other curricular content), teacher-trainers, educational administrators, educational publishers, textbook writers and researchers.

Languages of the Conferences :
While conference contributions and discussions of papers can be in any language, pre-conference as well as in-conference communication between congress organisators and participants will take place both in English and French.
Proposals submissions: From November 15th 2005 to February 15th 2006

* Registrations will be open at the end of January

* Response of the Scientific Council regarding the proposals: End of February 2006.

* Publication of the program first draft: March 15th 2006.

Plurilingualism and Language Awareness : Discussing the Connections

In recent years one of the notions that has emerged as crucial for both psycholinguistically and pedagogically oriented research has been that the linguistic functions of plurilingual individuals, including their acquisition of language, can only be described and sustained in the framework of global approaches, which must take into consideration the totality of languages and language varieties involved. It is in this context that the concepts of ''common underlying proficiency'', ''the holistic approach'', or 'plurilingual education' were developed, subsequently detailed by the Council of Europe, aimed at plurilingual education through ''Education for plurilingualism'' - and ''Education for plurilingual awareness'', aiming to promote diversity.

Proposals for papers submitted to this conference should address, from various perspectives, the connection between the objectives and processes referred to by these concepts and 'Language Awareness', in all its diversity (aspects, objects and participants).

This brings us to consider the following questions (which are neither exhaustive nor independent of one another):

- What effects are highlighted between the elements of various languages, or linguistic varieties, in the function of and/or construction of plurilingual competencies, and what part does linguistic awareness play in this process?

- What are the relations and effects that can be observed (or should be favoured) between linguistic and sociolinguistic representations of language in contact (notably those related to identity) and language competencies, including from the perspective of their development and maintenance?

- What are the implications for teaching, and what role can or should be envisaged for Language Awareness, in relation with the diversity of sociolinguistic contexts?

- What place should be assigned in teaching to « pluralistic approaches » to promote learning by connecting languages and cultures ? What are the roles for Language Awareness? What types of linguistic awareness should be developed, given the age and ability of the students? What Language Awareness is needed for other actors in the education system?

Language Awareness : a Tool for the Development of Plurilingualism ?

Since the pioneering work of the 1980s carried out in Great Britain, Language Awareness/Awakening to Languages has developed progressively, in various European countries through the impetus of coordinated initiatives between groups of different nationalities, and in other countries and regions of the world.

The theme chosen for this conference invites accounts of research conducted in diverse contexts, linked to the development of plurilingualism: both through the construction of plurilingual competencies as well as plurilingual education for plurilingual awareness. We are thus interested in :

- The ways in which links can be constructed between the « Language Awareness/Awakening to Languages » approach and the development of plurilingualism, given sociolinguistic and educational contexts (objectives).

- The concrete methods used in this approach: Which pedagogic approach and what class content, with which supports, what type of (self) evaluation of students ? (Teaching practices and didactic materials).

- The way in which Language Awareness is included in the curriculum: Where and when? With what progression, at what intensity?? How does it fit in with other academic subjects (including the language(s) of the school) and existing programmes? (Curriculum strategy).

- The reactions of others in the educational contexts to this approach: Uptake on the part of students, teachers and parents. Do the educational authorities accept or reject it ? (Reception by participants).

- The choice, education and support of those who implement the educational provision: What are the profiles and competencies of the teachers? What place is there/should be there for initial or in-service teacher education? What provision is there/should there be for assistance after the initial teacher-education? (Questions concerning teachers).

- The observed effects of Language Awareness/Awakening to Languages and the links with development of plurilingualism (evaluation of the approach).

Clearly, many of the contributions will touch upon a combination of these points. Contributions that present concrete examples of classroom reality will be especially welcome.

General structure

Conference interventions will be structured in the following way:

- Plenary sessions: Given to all conference delegates (or to both conferences on the 5th of July)

- Semi-Plenary sessions: Two plenaries given in parallel sessions (most likely in different languages)

- Workshop papers: The workshops consist of several papers on the same subject. They will take place over half a day, or half a half-day. Several workshops will function in parallel sessions. The timetables run strictly parallel so that each participant can change rooms between each of the workshop presentations.

- Poster Presentations: Posters will be exhibited during the length of the conference. Two times will be allocated for presentations by the authors. Style details such as size and format will be provided.
