Meeting Description:

The University of Sheffield is the leading centre for the study of the history
of linguistics in the UK and is proud to be hosting the 2006 annual conference
of the Henry Sweet Society for the History of Linguistic Ideas.  The programme
will encompass topics on the full range of periods and of linguistic thought and
practice. 

The 2006 Colloquium of the Henry Sweet Society for the History of Linguistic
Ideas will be held from Thursday 7 September to Sunday 11 September 2006 at the
University of Sheffield, UK.  The Leslie Seiffert Memorial Lecture will be
delivered by Peter Burke, Professor of Cultural History at the University of
Cambridge and author of Language and Communities in Early Modern Europe.  The
conference will overlap with a symposium on Linguistics and Social Theory in the
USSR 1917-38.  Those attending the HSS Colloquium will be welcome to enrol in
this symposium and vice versa.

Sheffield University is the leading centre for the study of the history of
linguistics in the United Kingdom, offering undergraduate, Master's level and
PhD-level teaching in this area.  The City of Sheffield is located centrally in
the United Kingdom, and is very accessible by air, train or road.  International
airports in close proximity to Sheffield include Manchester, East Midlands, and
Robin Hood Sheffield-Doncaster, and Sheffield is two hours north of London by
train.  Sheffield has witnessed a great deal of regeneration in recent years and
is now a vibrant and attractive city, surrounded by some of the most stunning
countryside in England.

Accommodation and meals will be provided at Ranmoor House, a hall of residence
15-minute walk or 5-minute bus journey from the main University site.  There
will also be the option of staying in nearby hotel accommodation, and all the
options will be indicated on the booking form, which will be available, along
with further information about the conference, on the Society website in early 2006.

Papers (30 minutes, including discussion) are invited on any aspect of the
history of linguistic thought or practice.  Ideas for themed sessions or panel
discussions are also very welcome.  All proposals, including title and abstract
(max. 250 words) should be sent to Fiona Marshall (f.c.marshall at shef.ac.uk, or
at the address below) by the end of February 2006.  These will be subject to
anonymous review. Notification of acceptance of proposals will be made by 31
March 2006.

NB: Financial assistance may be available via the Paul Salmon-Pieter Verburg
Memorial Fund to members of the Society, who wish to present a paper, but whose
financial circumstances make this difficult.  Information about this will be
posted on the Society's website in March 2006.

First Call for Papers

The Spanish Cognitive Linguistics Association (AELCO-SCOLA) aims to promote
research within the cognitive linguistics tradition. This approach holds that
language is an integral part of cognition and, therefore, should be understood
in terms of conceptualization and mental processing. More generally, cognitive
linguistics attempts to integrate sociocultural and perceptual aspects of
cognition with linguistic form and function.

Following the AELCO conferences in Alicante (1998), Madrid (2000), Valencia
(2002) y Zaragoza (2004), the 5th International Spanish Cognitive Linguistics
Conference will be held at the University of Murcia (October 19-21, 2006).

CALL FOR PAPERS

We cordially invite researchers working within the cognitive linguistics
paradigm to submit paper proposals. Special priority will be given to those
papers that show close connections with the other cognitive sciences (e.g.,
cognitive psychology and psycholinguistics, philosophy of mind, neuroscience or
cognitive anthropology). 

Papers may be presented as either communications or posters. Communications will
be 20 minutes long plus a five-minute discussion period. Poster sessions will be
divided into two groups: one for research projects and another for individual
researchers. Posters will receive very prominent attention from the organizers.

There will be a prize awarded to the best poster and pre- and post-doctoral

Proposals for communications and posters should be sent to ''aelco2006 at um.es''
before April 15, 2006. Each abstract should be sent as a file attachment and
comply with the following requirements: 

1. Title in boldface
2. The text may be up to 30 lines/500 words, including references
3. Please do not include the names or affiliations of the authors and avoid
obvious references to them

The body of the email should contain:

- Name and affiliation
- Title of contribution
- Snail-mail address
- Email and/or fax
- Phone number
- Preference for either communication or poster
- Keywords (maximum of five)
- Whether or not you would like to compete for the AELCO conference prizes

The subject line should contain the title of the presentation.

-15 June 2006: notification of acceptance
