sessions with sufficient time for discussions of the issues raised. Papers will
be presented in plenary or topic oriented sessions.
The conference will welcome three keynote speakers - Eduard Hovy, Louise Guthrie
and James Pustejovsky, and it will offer two special panels devoted to Emotions
and Search in Speech.
Social events including a trip in the vicinity of Brno will allow for additional
informal interactions.

SUBMISSION OF PAPERS

Authors are invited to submit a full paper not exceeding 8 pages formatted in
the LNCS style (see below). Those accepted will be presented either orally or as
posters. The decision about the presentation format will be based on the
recommendation of the reviewers. The authors are asked to submit their papers
using the on-line form accessible from the conference website.
Papers submitted to TSD 2006 must not be under review by any other conference or
publication during the TSD review cycle, and must not be previously published or
accepted for publication elsewhere.
As reviewing will be blind, the paper should not include the authors' names and
affiliations. Furthermore, self-references that reveal the author's identity,
e.g., ''We previously showed (Smith, 1991) ...'', should be avoided. Instead,
use citations such as ''Smith previously showed (Smith, 1991) ...''. Papers
that do not conform to the requirements above are subject to be rejected without
review.
The authors are strongly encouraged to write their papers in TeX or LaTeX
formats. These formats are necessary for the final versions of the papers that
will be published in the Springer Lecture Notes. Authors using a WORD
compatible software for the final version must use the LNCS template for WORD
and within the submit process ask the Proceedings Editors to convert the paper
to LaTeX format. For this service a service-and-license fee of CZK 1500 will be
levied automatically.
The paper format has to be either PDF or PostScript file with all required fonts
included. Upon notification of acceptance, presenters will receive further
information on submitting their camera-ready and electronic sources (for
detailed instructions on the final paper format see
http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html#Proceedings.)
Authors are also invited to present actual projects, developed software or
interesting material relevant to the topics of the conference. The presenters
of the demonstration should provide the abstract not exceeding one page. The
demonstration abstracts will not appear in the conference proceedings.

Subject Language(s): French (fra)

Call Deadline: 31-Mar-2006

Meeting Description:

This conference will aim to provide an overview of current research on the
linguistic diversity of the 96 départements of France, within both an historical
and contemporary framework.

Despite the desire for linguistic unity that underpins the Republican myth of
France as a monolingual State, despite the aggressive assimilation policies
pursued since the Revolution, and despite the 1992 change to the Constitution,
making French the official language of the Republic, a number of languages
continue to survive, and in some cases thrive, from Boulogne-sur-Mer to
Bonifacio, from Strasbourg to St Brieuc. France is home not only to a
significant number of regional heritage languages, but also to a host of migrant
languages, both from European neighbours and from beyond the continent. At the
same time, languages, such as verlan and its descendents, are developed by the
young or the disaffected, whilst French finds itself in productive contact with
numerous other languages, both as a donor and as a recipient. Moreover, European
bureaucrats are creating a new French at the hub of the European Union in
Strasbourg. On a number of levels, French itself is thus transformed, with other
languages challenging its hegemony, creating, as some see it, a siege mentality
amongst those who seek to police linguistic matters. Given these languages of
France and the porosity of the country's linguistic borders, the question of
French identity in the twenty-first century must be understood in a number of
new ways.

Initial abstracts, in either French or English, for papers (to last twenty
minutes) are invited on themes including, but not limited to:

-	the regional heritage languages: past, present and future
-	community languages in France: from Rroma to Berber and
                beyond
-	language policy
-	languages in contact: trends in morphology
-	language and the media
-	language and Republicanism
-	Anglicisation and globalisation
-	La Francophonie and supranational institutions
-	language and identity
-	the linguistic boundaries of French
-	youth-speak and other variants

Confirmed keynote speakers are Dr Alexandra Jaffe (California State University,
Long Beach), Dr Mari Jones (Peterhouse, Cambridge) and Professor Gabrielle
Parker (Middlesex). Proposals for papers, accompanied by a short abstract,
should be sent by e-mail to the conference organiser, Robert Blackwood
(robert.blackwood at liverpool.ac.uk) by 31 March 2006. A provisional programme
will appear by 31 May 2006.
