Meeting Description: 

Applications are invited for admission to the 2nd IGEL (International Society for the Empirical Study of Literature and Media) Summer Institute, which will take place at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, from Sunday 30 July 2006 through Friday 4 August. The Program of the Summer Institute is concerned with the cooperation of Humanities and Social Science students in order to develop adequate methods for the empirical investigation of literature and the media (see the IGEL 2006 Call for Papers at http://www.arts.ualberta.ca/igel/ for examples of the kind of topics to be investigated). 

There is only a limited number of places available. The successful candidates will work in small groups supervised by a staff of 6 or 7 experienced researchers in the empirical study of literature and the media. Emphasis will be on workshop-like activities with a high relevance for the practice of planning, carrying out, and evaluating empirical research. Attention will be given both to methods of the social sciences (such as, for instance, multivariate techniques) and those of the humanities (such as, for instance, the analysis of point of view).

Applications should be accompanied by: 
- a statement of motivation (why is it you believe you will profit from your attending the Institute) 
- your CV, describing your studies and professional background until now 
- a brief statement about how you see empirical studies in your future career 
- the description of a research project that you plan to undertake and which may be the object of discussion during your time at the Institute. 

Applicants are encouraged to submit a paper also for the IGEL conference (but beware: closing date for those submissions is 13 February!). Also, at the IGEL conference there will be a poster presentation of what you developed at the Institute. 

A limited number of cheap double rooms will be available (the rate is 25 Euro, which is low for Munich). Allocation of these rooms will be on a first come first served basis.
