in Orléans (France). 13-15th of June 2006.

CALL FOR PAPERS
In the context of the organisation of the fourth Rencontres de Sémantique et Pragmatique, which will take place in Orléans from the 13 to the 15th of june 2006, please find here a double call for papers. 

Organised in 2006 by the 'Faculté des Lettres et des Sciences Humaines' of the University of Orléans (France), this colloquium follows the previous Rencontres de Sémantique et Pragmatique (Paris 8, 1996 ; Orléans 1999 ; Sousse, 2002). It includes a central thematic session on :  

''The Place of Meaning in Linguistics'' 

and non thematic sessions allowing to present ongoing research. 
Its aim is to allow researchers to discuss fundamental questions and evolutions in semantics and pragmatics, and to allow collaborators and readers of the Revue de Sémantique et Pragmatique to meet.

Submissions :

Proposals of communications must be sent before the 16th of February 2006 directly by email as an attachment at :  rsp at univ-orleans.fr

or, by postal mail (with a diskette) at :

Abstracts may be proposed either as part of the thematic session on the place of meaning in linguistics or as part of non-thematic sessions. The abstract must not be longer than 2 pages (times new roman, 12, 2,5 cm margins), including references. They must be anonymous and the author's name(s) and affiliation(s) must be included in the body of the message or a separate spreadsheet. 

Poster sessions are planned.

Communications may be presented in the publishing languages of the Revue de Sémantique et Pragmatique, namely French, German, English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.

The decisions of the scientific committee will be communicated on the 2nd of March 2006.

Call for Papers (Thematic Session) : The place of Meaning in Linguistics

Whereas it seems that no linguistic theory has ever been proposed that would explicitly exclude phonology, morphology or syntax, many theories on the contrary have dreamed of mechanisms which would either exclude meaning radically, or set it aside, or minimize it as much as possible, and some have defended the idea that a theory of language was possible only by leaving meaning aside.

Such radical principles have initially been developed in a structuralist frame, either within the linguistic versions of 'behaviorism', or in many interpretations of saussurism, as long as it seemed to most linguists that the question of meaning was too fuzzy to be studied scientifically. But a similar temptation may also be observed in the generative framework, which, after defending initially the project of a linguistic model 'from sound to meaning' have later on, after strong debates, reduced the place of meaning in linguistics to a minimal semantics, parallel to syntax, scaled down to the theoretical status of an output of genuine linguistic processes, and an input of further interpretative external and non linguistic mechanisms, without any possible retroaction.

On the opposite, theories have emerged and grown, notably after 1970, which have defended the idea that a linguistic theory which would exclude meaning and interlocution would be a truncated, illusory and possibly impossible linguistics, so that it is not uncommon today to claim that without good pragmatics, good semantics is impossible, without good semantics, good morphology is impossible, so that without both, accounting for the lexicon is impossible, even at morpho-syntactic and prosodic levels.

It is to these fundamental issues - which structure research in semantics and pragmatics, reappear in technical form in many recent debates and often intersect with the question of the semantic/pragmatic interface - that the fourth Rencontres de Sémantique et Pragmatique have chosen to dedicate their central session. 

Proposals of communication which illustrate or discuss the diversity of the existing views about the place of meaning in linguistics are welcome. 
As a result of RSP4, a volume will be published on this subject based on the submitted outcomes of this communications. 

Call for Papers (Non-thematic Sessions)

Proposals of communication about ongoing work on semantics, pragmatics or their relations, illustrating empirical, methodological or theoretical advances are welcome.

Poster sessions are part of non thematic sessions. 

As a result of RSP4, a volume of the Revue de Sémantique et Pragmatique will be published based on the submitted outcomes of this communications.

The i2010 initiative, adopted under the renewed Lisbon agenda, concerns information, communication and media industries and caters, among others, for the possibility of European citizens to ''watch or listen to audiovisual content anytime, anywhere and on all technical platforms (TVset, computer, mobile phone, personal digital assistant, etc.)''. In fact, much of the information that reaches the user nowadays is in digital form: digital radio, music CDs, MP3 files, digital satellite and digital terrestrial TV, personal digital pictures and videos and, last but not least, digital information accessed through the Web. This information is heterogeneous, multimedia and, increasingly, multi-lingual in nature.

The development of methods and tools for content-based organization and filtering of this large amount of multimedia information that reaches the user is a key issue for effective content consumption. Advances in medium-specific (audio, image, text) processing have facilitated the development of tools for indexing multimedia content. It is no coincidence, for example, that text-based indexing methods of such content prevail; text processing has reached a level of maturity that enables shallow semantic analysis for identifying keywords, terms and named entities as indexing terms, with considerable progress being made in the extraction of events and facts, i.e. a wealth of information for more accurate indexing. Experiments are ongoing on applying this type of indexing on speech recognition output as such or/and on associating web text to such output (for recovering from ASR mistakes) and then performing text-based indexing (cf. work within the PRESTOSPACE project, www.prestospace.org); speech processing can provide automatic speech transcriptions of good quality (in certain acoustic conditions), as well as speaker turn and identification information. On the other hand, image-based indexing methods for multimedia content rely on basic image processing and in particular on the extraction of keyframes, shotcuts and low-level image features, while progress in developing face detection, face identification and object recognition technologies contribute to a more promising future for such approaches.

However, competitions such as TRECVID and Image-CLEF have shown that some benefits in performance can be gained through the fusion of the results of visual and linguistic analyses of multimedia content. Research on the automatic association of images with corresponding textual data go beyond fusion of medium-specific results to multimedia integration for, among others, indexing and retrieval applications (cf. work on UP-TV, ACEMEDIA and BUSMAN projects), while a more general notion of ''crossing media'' within or/and across documents seems to emerge too (cf. the REVEAL THIS project, www.reveal-this.org).

The workshop aims at exploring these new tendencies in accessing multimedia content by bringing together researchers working on the development of indexing technologies for archived and contemporary multimedia content. The focus of the workshop is the notion of ''cross-media'' mechanisms for multimedia indexing and retrieval and its realisation in research prototypes. Topics of interest to the workshop include (but are not limited to):

The workshop will consist of oral and poster presentations.
