In the latest issue of TESOL Quarterly, I co-wrote a critique of the recent
Standards created by TESOL (the international ESL professional association)
in collaboration with NCATE (National Council for the Accreditation of
Teacher Education) for accreditation of K-12 ESL teacher education programs
in the US. Suresh Canagarajah, the TQ editor, has established an area for
discussion of this issue in the TQ Forum website. Since a substantial number of
linguists are involved in ESL teacher education in one form or another, there
may be substantial interest in this discussion. Therefore, I would like to point
interested readers in the direction of our article and
discussion.

My hope is to develop a serious discussion aimed at developing a more coherent
and rigorous system for ESL teacher education program accreditation than the one
put forward by TESOL.
