The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Job Rank: Researcher
Specialty Areas: Typology

Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Leipzig invites applications
for a half-time position in syntactic typology, starting April 1 or later. The
salary is based on the German BAT-O IIa/2 payscale and the position is
especially (but not exclusively) suitable for a student who wishes to persue a
doctoral degree in typology in Leipzig. The position is limited to three years
but continuation beyond that is possible in follow-up projects.

The successful applicant will work with a research team headed by Balthasar
Bickel (U Leipzig) and Ina Bornkessel (MPI for Cognitive and Brain Sciences,
Leipzig) in an interdisciplinary project on the processing of grammatical
relations during comprehension in typologically distinct languages. The main
task of the successful applicant will be detailed comparative research into the
grammatical relations of Hindi, Chechen and Mandarin Chinese, the fine-tuning of
typological variables for comparing grammatical relations in general, and help
in the preparation of stimulus material for neuropsychological experiments in
collaboration with other team members.

The project is part of a new DFG research unit 'Grammar and Processing of
Verbal Arguments' (Forschergruppe 742; http://www.uni-leipzig.de/~va), of
the AUTOTYP research program on typological databases
(http://www.uni-leipzig.de/~autotyp), and of the MPI Junior Research Group on
Neurotypology (http://www.cbs.mpg.de).

The working language of the project is English, but at least a passive knowledge
of German would be an asset. Skills in database technology and corpus research
are additional assets. Applicants should have at least an MA in (general)
linguistics in hand.

Applicants should send an e-mail to Balthasar Bickel
(bickel at uni-leipzig.de) by February 15. The e-mail should briefly explain why
the applicant would be qualified for this project and should contain a full CV
as a pdf attachment.

Review of applications begins February 15 but will continue until the
position is filled.
