Description:

The Faculty of Education, University of Calgary, invites nominations and
applications for the position of Chair in English as an Additional Language
(EAL). The initial term as Chair will be for three to five years and is
subject to renewal. The Chair in EAL is a newly created position, supported
by both the community and the university, and established in direct
recognition of the importance of immigration, integration and
multilingualism to Canada's ethos.  The purpose of the Chair in EAL is to
promote and support the development of positive social change through
collaborative and community oriented research in living, learning or
working where proficiency in English as an additional language is perceived
as a significant factor, capable of affecting equitable access to
opportunities in Canadian society. 

The Position:
The Chair in EAL is open to distinguished individuals whose qualifications
merit a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Senior Associate or Full
Professor. We are seeking an internationally recognized scholar with an
established reputation in the implementation and application of research
designed to effect change in social, educational or occupational policies
or practices, related to speakers and learners of English as an Additional
Language. 

The successful Chair will join an existing group of faculty, staff, and
students and will be expected to collaborate with EAL stakeholders and the
community including government, professions and educational institutions.
The Chair will engage in collaborative research, graduate and undergraduate
teaching in the Faculty of Education and service in the area of EAL. The
Chair's area of expertise may include but need not be limited to such areas
as: language planning policy, second language acquisition, curriculum
implementation, language minority education, assessing English language
proficiency, intercultural communication and literacy, and the analysis of
public policy questions surrounding EAL.
