ABSTRACTS

Abstracts are invited for 20-minute talks (with 10 minutes of discussion) on any aspect of theoretical linguistics. Abstracts are also invited for a poster session. Please specify all the sessions for which you would like to be considered.

Submissions are limited to one individual and one joint abstract per author. All abstracts should be in English, and submitted as attachments, in PDF format, to the following email address: wecol at csufresno.edu. 

The subject of the message should specify <Abstract>, and the body should include the following information: author name(s), affiliation, e-mail address, title of abstract, and area of linguistics (syntax, phonology, acquisition, phonetics, computational linguistics, etc.). 

Abstracts should be limited to one page (using 1-inch margins on all sides and 11pt font size) with an optional additional page containing examples and references. 

Non-standard fonts and software should be avoided and all fonts should be embedded in the PDF document. The papers presented at WECOL 06 will be eligible for publication in the official proceedings of the conference.

APPEL A COMMUNICATIONS

- Arriverai-je un jour à poser au moins les assises d'une juste théorie de la préposition? Je n'ose avoir cette ambition, tant la question soulève de difficultés - écrivait le linguiste français Gustave Guillaume dans sa leçon du 28 avril 1949. Plus de 50 ans se sont écoulés depuis cette date et la préposition reste l'une des parties du discours qui suscite le plus d'interrogations. L'objectif de ce colloque est de réunir des chercheurs qui travaillent sur la catégorie prépositionnelle tant dans une optique diachronique que synchronique ou contrastive et dans quelque langue que ce soit. Les aspects psycholinguistiques et le traitement automatique des langues pourront également être pris en compte.

Les thèmes suivants, qui ont déjà souvent été abordés sans recevoir de réponse définitive (cf. revue Faits de Langues n° 9) et dont la liste n'est naturellement pas exhaustive, pourront être pris en compte :

- La préposition constitue une classe comportant, selon les langues, des pré-positions, des post-positions et / ou des circum-positions. Comment définir cette classe et établir la liste des unités qui la composent? Quel est le statut des particules verbales/adverbiales? La notion de - locution prépositive » est-elle défendable? Quels rapports les prépositions entretiennent-elles avec les préfixes? De telles questions peuvent déboucher sur un traitement dans une perspective de typologie des langues.

- La préposition est souvent définie comme tête du groupe prépositionnel. Quels arguments peut-on apporter pour justifier une telle définition? Comment concilier cette définition avec une autre caractérisation de la préposition comme relateur? Quelle est alors la portée de la préposition? Quelles entités met-elle en relation? Quelles sont ses relations avec les cas?

- Toutes les prépositions ont-elles un sens ou certaines sont-elles totalement incolores? Comment ce sens peut-il être décrit? Les différents effets de sens d'une préposition peuvent-ils être ramenés à une valeur fondamentale unique ou chaque préposition comporte-t-elle un certain nombre de sens distincts mémorisés? Tous les sens effectifs sont-ils mémorisés ou certains sont-ils construits à partir du contexte? Comment s'organise le réseau sémantique d'une préposition donnée? Faut-il accepter l'idée d'un sens spatial qui serait primaire (perspective localiste) ? Comment la polysémie prépositionnelle peut-elle être prise en compte en traitement automatique?

Durée des communications : 25 minutes - 10 minutes (discussion)

Propositions de communication :

Les propositions de communication, en français ou en anglais, comporteront le titre de la communication et un résumé de 3200 signes environ, espaces compris (1 page A4 interligne simple maximum). Le résumé devra exposer clairement la problématique, préciser les outils d'analyse ainsi que, éventuellement, le cadre théorique de référence. Elles seront évaluées de façon anonyme par un comité scientifique. Elles seront envoyées par voie électronique à l'adresse ci-dessous. Le message qui accompagne le résumé comportera les coordonnées complètes de l'auteur ainsi que le titre du résumé joint en fichier attaché.

CALL FOR PAPERS

- ''Shall I ever be able to lay the bases of a theory of the preposition? The question raises so many difficulties that I dare not have such an ambition,'' wrote the French linguist Gustave Guillaume in a lecture he gave on April 28, 1949. More than fifty years have passed and the preposition as a part of speech is still much debated. The aim of this conference is to bring together researchers who are interested in prepositions from a diachronic and/or synchronic and/or contrastive point of view, in any language whatsoever. Psycholinguistic and computational contributions are welcome.

The theoretical issues addressed in the conference can be summarized, non-exhaustively, in terms of the following questions :

- Prepositions, perhaps better called appositions, can be pre-positions, post-positions or circum-positions, according to languages. How can the class be defined and how can the list of the units that belong to it be drawn up? What about verbal/adverbial particles? Multi-word prepositions? What are the relations between prepositions and prefixes? Such questions may lead to typological contributions.

- Prepositions are often taken as heads of phrases. Why should they be regarded as such? They are also considered as expressing a relation between two entities. What entities are related and what is the scope of the preposition? Are prepositions case markers?

- Are all prepositions meaningful or are some of them totally devoid of meaning? How can prepositional meanings be defined? Do prepositions have a single invariant meaning from which all actual meanings can be derived (monosemy approach) or do they have several distinct meanings associated to them (polysemy approach)? What is the role of the context in the interpretation of a preposition? How is the semantic network of a preposition organized? Is the primary meaning of a preposition necessarily a spatial meaning? How does natural language processing deal with the multiple meanings of prepositions?

Presentations in French or in English will last 25 minutes followed by 10 minutes discussion.

Format and evaluation of abstracts :

Abstracts will be refereed anonymously. They must include the title of the paper and be in French or in English (using the language of the actual presentation). They should not exceed 3200 characters, including spaces (one A4 page with single spacing). The abstract will expose the issues which are addressed and specify the methodological approach and the theoretical background.
Abstracts are to be submitted as an attachment in Word or RTF format to an email sent to crisco.collPrep at unicaen.fr. The email accompanying the abstract should contain the title of the paper, the name of the author(s) and their full coordinates.

The proceedings are to be published electronically in the Bibliothèque de Syntaxe et Sémantique (Presses Universitaires de Caen).
