The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Research Officer 1A/1B
(Temporary Part-Time Contract - 52 days spread over the period 01/09/06 -
31/07/07)
(Reference: 5528)

Salary: £22,774 - £24,161 pro-rata (Research Officer 1B)
£24,886 pro-rata (Research Officer 1A)

The Surrey Morphology Group at the University of Surrey is looking for a
part-time Research Assistant to work on the British Academy funded project
'Essential documentation of seven highly endangered Oceanic languages.' The
project will work with existing field materials gathered in the Solomon
Islands and Bougainville to make primary documentation on the languages
available as a digital resource via the worldwide web and the PARADISEC and
ELAR electronic archives.

You will transcribe audio recordings of primary data, enter data into
lexical databases, enter transcriptions into Shoebox/Toolbox software, and
prepare audio and other materials for electronic delivery.

With a good undergraduate degree in linguistics, you will have experience
transcribing exotic language data from audio sources, and experience
working with lexical data. If that is you, we would like to hear from you.

Familiarity with Shoebox software is not essential but would be helpful, as
would some familiarity with Oceanic languages, and/or some knowledge of Tok
Pisin or another variety of Melanesian Pidgin. A PhD in linguistics would
be an advantage.

Most of your work will take place on-site at the University of Surrey,
England. The post is notionally one day per week. However, the actual
distribution of days across the 11 months of the contract is subject to
negotiation.

The Surrey Morphology Group is a lively and stimulating research community
with diverse interests and expertise, and range of ongoing research
projects with a history of collaboration in the international linguistic
community. For more information about the Group, see
