The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; Second Language Acquisition
Required Language(s): Spanish (spa)

Description:

Research Fellow (Spanish linguistics/SLA)
Salary: £23,457-£25,633

Applications are invited for the position of Research Fellow on the
ESRC-funded research project "Linguistic development in L2 Spanish:
creation and analysis of a learner corpus" (www.splloc.soton.ac.uk). Based
in the School of Humanities/ Modern Languages at the University of
Southampton (UK), you will contribute to all aspects of data gathering,
database creation, data analysis and dissemination on this collaborative
project. The other members of the research team are: Professor Ros Mitchell
(Project Director); Professor Florence Myles (Project Director, University
of Newcastle); Dr Emma Marsden (Project Director, University of York); Dr
Laura Dominguez (Assistant Director) and Dr Sarah Rule (CHILDES adviser).

This is a 2-year project which started in April 2006. (The post of Research
Fellow is being re-advertised because of the promotion of Dr Dominguez to
Lecturer in Modern Languages.) The aims of the project are:

1. To establish a small scale, high quality database of spoken learner
Spanish, transcribe and tag the data using CHILDES software and promote use
of this new resource among the Spanish SLA research community.

2. To undertake a short programme of substantive research into L2 Spanish
morphosyntax using the database (development of verb inflections, verb
movement, clitic pronouns and word order).

3. To clarify interfaces between morphology, syntax and pragmatics in the
development of L2 Spanish.

During the first year of the project the team is designing a range of
elicitation tasks to gather spoken L2 Spanish from learners at beginner,
intermediate and advanced level. Using these tasks, digital audio data will
be collected from learners in local schools and colleges, and also from
undergraduates in Southampton and Newcastle, in the winter of 2006-7.

The digital audio data will be transcribed using CHAT conventions, and
tagged for parts of speech using CLAN software. The substantive research
programme of the project will be carried out during the second year of the
project, and will also be supported through the use of CLAN.

Applicants will hold a doctorate in a relevant area of linguistics/ applied
linguistics/ second language acquisition, and will have a good knowledge of
Spanish morphosyntax as well as second language acquisition theory.
Applicants will have fieldwork experience, and an interest/ aptitude in the
development of corpus based approaches to research on the L2 acquisition of
Spanish syntax, morphology and pragmatics. Native/ near native competence
in Spanish is required.

This is a fixed term full time appointment from 1 October 2006 until 31
March 2008.
