The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

University or Organization: Oxford University Press
Department: Oxford English Dictionary
Specialty Areas: General Linguistics
Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

Oxford English Dictionary
Assistant Editors (x3) , ref. 06/181
Editorial Assistant (x1), ref. 06/183
Salary: in the region of £19000 (Assistant Editor) or in the region of
£17000 (Editorial Assistant).

Three additional Assistant Editors are required to join the team of
lexicographers working on the revision of the Oxford English Dictionary.
The OED is the premier reference work in its field, documenting the English
language from the Middle Ages to the present day. It is currently
undergoing its first full revision since its original publication between
1884 and 1928, and completed sections are being published quarterly online.

The successful applicants will be expected to work on a wide variety of
tasks, such as revising and adding definitions, etymologies, and
pronunciations, and carrying out research to find supporting quotation
evidence using the OED's extensive online and paper-based resources.

An Editorial Assistant is also required to research and record historical
spelling variation, including variants from Middle English and regional
literature. The jobholder would also research appropriate quotation
evidence for World English entries.

Applicants should have a First or Upper Second class degree; they must be
able to work accurately, logically, and rapidly through complex linguistic
data, and be able to write clearly and concisely. Practical experience of
online research and of working to strict editorial guidelines is desirable.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete an aptitude test to
demonstrate lexicographic reasoning.

Further information regarding the OED revision project is available on the
OED website, www.oed.com.
