We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

Dear All,

I am writing a dissertation on the CP system in Arabic and I would be
grateful if anyone could answer the following question if only very briefly.

As you may already know, in Arabic there is a particle ''inna/anna'' which
is commonly analyzed as a complementizer in the generative literature and
which always assigns accusative Case to a right-adjacent nominal whether in
root clauses or in embedded ones.

I don't know if similar (Case-assigning) complementizers exist in other
languages and I would greatly appreciate your comments.

Sincerely,
Driss Marjane

Dear List Members:

Some years ago I copied down the following (translated) quote from
Priscian's Institutiones Grammaticae as follows:

"just as letters combining appropriately form syllables, and syllables
words, so too do words form a sentence"

I was convinced I'd copied it from Robin's History of Linguistics, but I
can't find it anywhere there.

Can anybody help me with a source?

thanks

Ed McDonald
