Regarding query: http://www.linguistlist.org/issues/17/17-706.html#1

Hi everybody, here is my summary of the answers to my query about
1)studies of narrative development in an L2 along the lines of cohesion/
coherence/ story grammar
2)such studies in an immersion context.

I. The overall conclusion: Even though there are abundant studies of this
type for many L1s, there is scarce material on L2 narrative acquisition. As
one of the contributors said, it is probably more worthwhile to look at
studies done in bilingualism. The most promising collection of papers in
this area is: Verhoeven, Ludo & Strömquist, Sven (eds.), 2001. Narrative
development in a multilingual context. Amsterdam, Philadelphia: John Benjamins.

II. Here are some other articles and books I have been directed to, which
sound promising. I have not yet been able to confirm to what extent each
one contributes to the topic, so here goes the complete list:

Aarssen, Jeroen. (1996). Relating events in two languages: Acquisition of
cohesive devices by Turkish-Dutch bilingual children at school age.
Tilburg:Tilburg University Press.

Francis, Norbert, 2000. An examination of written expression in bilingual
students' "non-academic" language: Assessment of sense of story structure
and interlinguistic transfer. International Journal of Applied Linguistics,
10 (2), 27-58.

Francis, Norbert, 2001. Géneros orales y estilos de narrative: El desarollo
de la competencia discursive. Estudios de Lingüística Aplicada, 33, 71-92.

Francis, Norbert, 2003. Language interaction in Náhuatl discourse: The
influence of Spanish in child and adult narratives. Language, Culture and
Curriculum, 16 (1), 1-17.

Rubio, Fernando, 2003. Structure and complexity of oral narratives in
advanced level Spanish: a comparison of three learning backgrounds.''
Foreign Language Annals (Special Issue) 36, 4 537-45.

Verhoeven, L. (1991) Language acquisition. In Hendrik Boeschoten and Ludo
Verhoeven. (Eds.) Turkish linguistics today. Leiden: E. J. Brill.

Wieler, Petra, 2005. Narratives Lernen in medialen und anderen Kontexten.
Freiburg, Breisgau: Filibach.

III. Of interest might also be studies with a focus on the acquisition of
literacy:

Francis, Norbert, 2005. Bilingual children's writing: self-correction and
revision of written narratives in Spanish and Nahuatl. Linguistics and
Education 16, 74-92.

_________, 2006. The development of secondary discourse ability and
metalinguistic awareness in second language learners. International Journal
of Applied Linguistics, 16 (1), 37-60.

IV. To find out more about the topic in general, the bibliography of Berman
& Slobin 1994 is recommended:
Berman, R. A. & Slobin, D. I. (1994). Relating events in narrative: A
crosslinguistic developmental study. Hillsdale: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates
Press. (the studies included are all on L1)

V. I was also directed to the studies and projects of:
Bernt Ahrenholz (German as a second L project) using von Stutterheim's
approach to narrative, Tanja Anstatt, Manfred Pienemann, Kutlay Yagmur, and
two practical projects in Berlin by Kristin Wardetzky ("Storytelling for
children of migration backgrounds") and Marianne Streisand & Maik Walter
(Narrative approach to German as a second language; adults as target group).

Last but not least: I hope I have been able to do justice to all the good
advice that I received and would like to express my gratitude to Guy
Edwards, Constance Ellwood, Norbert Francis, Susann Lingel, Mehmet Ozcan,
Fernando Rubio and Maik Walter.

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.
