Description:
Western Carolina University seeks a director of the Cherokee language
program.  Position Description: This grant funded position will teach half
time; improve curriculum and materials for existing Cherokee language
courses; work with the School of Education to facilitate the creation of a
program to prepare elementary teachers for work in a Cherokee language
immersion environment, and work in concert with Eastern Band of the
Cherokee Indian's language revitalization programs.  One year appointment
subject to renewal based on program effectiveness and continued funding.  
Review of applications will begin May 22, 2006 and position will remain
open until filled.  Training and experience requirements: A Ph.D. in
anthropological or applied linguistics or related field from an accredited
institution (ABD may be considered); experience working with Cherokee or
Native American communities; the ability to work well with university and
Cherokee communities; and the ability to write grants and administer
budgets.  University/college teaching experience is preferred as well as
experience with technology specific to language revitalization.
