Description:
The English for International Students Unit (EISU) provides programmes in
English for Academic Purposes for international students coming to or
already studying at Birmingham University. EISU also delivers courses in
Business Management English and general English and offers a variety of
continuing professional development courses for English language teachers
and lecturers. EISU staff supervise PhD students and contribute to Masters
programmes in TEFL and Applied Linguistics. The unit is part of the English
Department and has a strong international research profile, and the
teaching is research-led. EISU lecturers are research active in several
areas, including English for Academic Purposes, Business English, the
teaching of figurative Language, learner autonomy, genre analysis and
language testing.

Duties
Preparing materials for, and teaching on, our insessional EAP programme,
which comprises both generic and subject specific academic English 

Providing 1-1 tuition for international students 

Developing material and teaching English language and applied linguistics
on our continuing professional development programmes for Japanese
secondary school language teachers and Chinese university English language
lecturers. 

Developing and delivering courses in academic writing for native speaker
undergraduates in the School of Humanities under the university's widening
participation programme 

Supervising PhD students and visitors to the Centre for Advanced Research
in English in a range of areas in Applied Linguistics and English Language
Teaching 

Conducting research and publishing in the areas of TEFL and Applied
Linguistics 

Teaching on our International Foundation Programmes for non-native speakers
of English 

Devising and delivering modules for the MA in TEFL and Applied Linguistics
in the Centre for English Language Studies 

Contributing to the general administration of the Unit 


Requirements

Essential:

Considerable experience in teaching or lecturing in English for Academic
Purposes in Britain or overseas (minimum three years) 
A PhD in TEFL or Applied Linguistics 
A record of recent, relevant publication in the area of TEFL or Applied
Linguistics 
Administrative and management skills judged sufficient to allow the
candidate to be a possible Director of EISU at some future time

Desirable:

Teaching and/or research interests in one or more of the following areas:

Language teaching methodology 
Classroom-based research 
English for Academic Purposes 
Experience of teaching English for specific academic purposes (e.g. to
students of engineering or law). 
Learner autonomy 
Cross cultural awareness 
Experience with Web-CT 
Teaching experience in East Asia
