non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international

Description:

The Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL), a university-affiliated
research center located at the University of Maryland, was established in
2003 under a renewable five-year contract. Its mission is to conduct
state-of-the-art research in areas that result in improved performance on
language tasks relevant to the work of government language professionals.
Work done at the center focuses on improving knowledge of less commonly
taught languages, enhancing the acquisition and maintenance of foreign
language capability by government professionals (especially at the advanced
levels), advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in a wide
variety of government professions and situations, and improving the quality
of human language technology. Throughout the center, researchers from
linguistics, cognitive and computer science, and anthropology, work in
collaborative teams to aid government professionals in the improvement of
their on the job performance or foreign language training.

CASL is seeking to add a specialist in the area of human-computer
interaction to its team. The ideal candidate will have:
- experience with user profiling, task analysis, and usability testing;
- the ability to analyze existing tool interfaces and, based on results,
make the tool more intuitively usable by a wider range of users;
- knowledge of and experience with applied HCI methods including: iterative
prototyping of interactive interfaces, empirical evaluation methods,
contextual inquiry, interview protocols, questionnaire design, and expert
evaluation methods;
- experience with user-centric application design for language-oriented
applications, such as language productivity tools or second language
acquisition programs.

Candidates must have an advanced degree in Human Computer Interaction (or
Computer Science, Psychology, or Industrial Engineering with specialization
in HCI), excellent written and oral communication skills, prior experience
with project management, and the ability to work both independently and as
part of a team. The candidate's research record should indicate
accomplishment in areas related to the duties described above. Preference
will be given to those candidates whose record indicates the ability to
tackle complex, interdisciplinary research, and to work collaboratively
with a range of institutions and researchers. Candidates must hold U.S.
citizenship and be willing to obtain a security clearance. For information
on U.S. government security clearances, please see
