Description:

The Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL), a university-affiliated
research center located at the University of Maryland, was established in
2003 under a renewable five-year contract.  Its mission is to conduct
state-of-the-art research in areas that result in improved performance on
language tasks relevant to the work of government language professionals. 
Work done at the center focuses on improving knowledge of less commonly
taught languages, enhancing the acquisition and maintenance of foreign
language capability by government professionals (especially at the advanced
levels), advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in a wide
variety of government professions and situations, and improving the quality
of human language technology.

CASL is seeking to expand its research team in the area of
Psycholinguistics.  Applicants should be interested in applying knowledge
about the cognitive processes underlying language understanding,
production, translation, and second language learning by adults to
improving the on the job performance and language acquisition of U.S.
government foreign language professionals.  The applicant will be involved
in research projects using behavioral methods to investigate these issues. 

Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in psychology, linguistics, or a
related field with specializations in the psychology of language or
psycholinguistics, must have a demonstrated record of individual research
achievement, a strong record of publication, and the ability to work in a
team and to establish an interdisciplinary research program across areas
related to the study of language learning and use. Candidates must hold
U.S. citizenship and be willing to obtain a security clearance.  For

*CASL will be interviewing at the Annual LSA Conference in January 2007.
