Modern linguistics is mainly concerned with the link between concept and language, and largely ignores the problem of reference. This conference aims to explore the non-Cartesian philosophical legacy of the 20th century in order to put reference back into the picture.

Modern linguistics seems to be caught between cognitivist theories, generally unaware of their metaphysical nature, and descriptive, often corpus-based approaches, which are not much concerned with explanation. The former are rationalist, the latter empiricist, and both have inherited the Cartesian view of the world which prevails in Western culture and constitutes our default mode of thinking. Perhaps the moment has come for linguists to explore the non-Cartesian philosophical legacy of 20th century, namely the Heideggerian continental school of post-modern philosophy and the more critical branches of analytical philosophy, notably those inspired by Wittgenstein and Peirce. 
   
La linguistique actuelle semble prise entre des doctrines cognitivistes qui ignorent leur nature métaphysique et un pragmatisme descriptiviste sans ambition explicative. Les unes sont plutôt rationalistes, l'autre plutôt empiriste, mais tous sont issus de cet héritage cartésien qui prévaut dans la culture occidentale et qui en constitue le mode de pensée par défaut. Peut-être le moment est-il venu d'explorer du point de vue du linguiste l'héritage philosophique non cartésien du 20e siècle, c'est-à-dire les pistes ouvertes par la philosophie continentale inspirée par Heidegger et les branches les plus critiques de la philosophie analytique, notamment celles inspirées par Wittgenstein et Peirce. 

The first Res Per Nomen colloquium will be held in May 2007 at the University of Reims. The aim is primarily to allow for an initial meeting and to provide an overview of existing research in this area, as well as to set up future research programmes. Papers are invited on any relevant topic, such as the following :
- the object in language;
- reference in philosophy and linguistics;
- post-modern philosophy vs. philosophy of language;
- metaphysics in linguistic thought;
- meaning and interpretation;
- usage and semantics;
- usage and syntax;
- categories;
- truth, untruth and linguistic theory;
- the status of laws and rules in linguistics;
- the act of naming;
- Peirce, Wittgenstein, Derrida, Gadamer, Heidegger, etc. on reference in  language;
- sign and ontology;
- the problem with cognitivism;
- developing syntax without rules;
- developing semantics without universals;
- et caetera.

Le premier colloque Res Per Nomen se tiendra en mai 2007 à l'Université de Reims. L'objectif est d'abord de nous rencontrer et de faire état des résultats obtenus, puis de développer notre réflexion et de formuler des programmes de recherche. Les communications pourront porter, sans exclusive, sur les point suivants :
- l'objet en langue;
- la référence en philosophie et en linguistique;
- philosophie post-moderniste v. philosophie du langage;
- la métaphysique dans la réflexion linguistique;
- sens et interprétation;
- usage et sémantique;
- usage et syntaxe;
- les catégories;
- le mensonge et l'explication linguistique;
- statut des lois et règles en linguistique;
- la dénomination et l'acte de nommer;
- Peirce, Wittgenstein, Derrida, Deleuze, Gadamer, Heidegger, etc. sur la référence en langue;
- signe et ontologie;
- misère du cognitivisme;
- vers une syntaxe sans règles;
- une sémantique sans universaux;
- etc.
