Dissertation Abstract:

The subject of this study is Rafael Bluteau's Vocabulario Portuguez, e
Latino (1712-1728), with an emphasis on the typology of the work, sources,
lexicographical technique and the work's reception.

The chief concerns refer to the characterization of the work as the author
conceived it, the typological traits both of the universal and of the
bilingual dictionaries, as well as the manner in which the two forms
conjugated.

It is also within the scope to make an assessment of the selection and
organization of the nomenclature, within the context of the Portuguese
lexicographical patrimony and of the informative sources Bluteau had at his
disposal. This assessment is complemented with an examination of the
various information categories present in the structure of the articles.
The concluding part takes into consideration the reception of the
Vocabulario as a privileged lexical and informative source in the
transitional period leading to monolingual dictionaries.
