Inspired by the work of Maya Honda, Wayne O'Neil and others, students and
faculty in the Linguistics Program at Concordia University in Montreal have
launched the Concordia Linguistics Outreach Project (CLOUT). Our goal is to
transport the educational power of modern linguistic science out of the
university via workshops in elementary and high schools, prisons, public
libraries, etc. The decision to seek alternative educational settings was
rooted both in a desire to share the wonders of linguistics with the
outside world, and also in the hope that the nature of linguistic science
would get the minds of non-specialists excited about scientific inquiry. We
have set up a mailing list and a web site at
http://linguistics.concordia.ca/clout/ where we have posted information
about some of our experiences and resources that we are happy to share. We
welcome contributions of other resources-we have already received some from
prominent linguists-and our goal is to cooperate with linguists everywhere
to expand the scope of outreach work that the field engages in.
